About the role
Position: Groundskeeper Department: Grounds Maintenance
Primary responsibilities at various NBRHC locations include outdoor maintenance and care of grounds and landscapes which includes the operation of gasoline-powered grounds keeping equipment and machines, and the use of small hand and power tools or equipment in planning and trimming grounds and landscaping. There will be exposure to various climates and temperatures, as the work is performed primarily out of doors-year round.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Perform regular and directed grounds and landscape maintenance by mowing lawns with riding or push mowers; trimming and edging around trees, shrubs, ground cover, flowers, sidewalks and buildings; weeding, thinning and cleaning flower beds and other grounds by hand or utilizing proper tools and equipment

Perform tasks common to the care of grounds and landscapes by mulching, pruning, and trimming trees, shrubs, ground cover and flowers

Use shovels to remove snow and spread sand and salt on snow or ice covered surfaces at courtyard entrances

Removes unsightly trash and debris including cigarette ends from public areas by inspecting grounds, storm drains, for debris; raking, sweeping debris, dirt/trash from streets, sidewalks, parking lots, emptying garbage and cigarette receptacles, and transporting the trash to designated areas

Exterior cleanup including sidewalks and parking lots which could include rodent carcasses, biological waste, discarded syringes, broken glass, etc.
SUPPORTING DUTIES

Distribution and maintenance of barbeque and propane tanks for summer events, and storage of same at end of summer

Set up for hospital events as required-signage, barriers, stage, tents

Distribution of picnic tables, benches and umbrellas for summer use, and transferring to storage area at end of summer

Sweeping and cleaning ambulance bays
-
Assist with traffic control in parking lots for snow removal, sand removal, line painting using barricades

Check for fence damage, burnt or broken lights and notify supervisor when repairs are required

Basic maintenance of equipment used-change oil/filter, check blades
-
Assist with setting up of ceremonial grounds area including tipi

Check integrity of flags and replace them per flag policy

Maintain cleanliness and organization of storage garage
QUALIFICATIONS
Certification/Experience/Knowledge:
- Secondary School Diploma or equivalent required
- Experience with all aspects of grounds maintenance including use of specialized equipment (i.e. garden tools, snow shovels, chainsaw, axe, brooms, string trimmers, riding tracker, lawn mowers etc.)
- Ability to work in various outdoor climates and temperatures
Skills/Abilities:
- Good knowledge of proper body mechanics
- Ability to push/pull carts (1.5 kg to 10 kg force)
- Ability to lift up to 22 kg
- Valid Class G Driver’s License
- Chainsaw Safety Certificate
- Propane And BBQ Safety
- Computer knowledge to access task list
- Able to work under minimal supervision
- Good organizational, interpersonal and communication skills
- Availability for scheduled shifts and call-ins
- Good attendance and work record
- Demonstrate commitment to ensure your safety, the safety of fellow workers, patients volunteers and visitors
- Support and contribute to a culture of safety and prevention of adverse health events in this organization
- Bilingualism (Advanced level English/French) is an asset

The North Bay Regional Health Centre (NBRHC) is a unique healthcare organization with three primary roles. It provides acute care services to North Bay and its surrounding communities, it is the district referral centre providing specialist services for smaller communities in the area, and it is the specialized mental health service provider serving all of northeast Ontario
