About the role
The Junior Marine Systems Engineer supports the design, construction, testing, and delivery of Royal Canadian Navy and Canadian Coast Guard vessels. Working under the Hull Outfit & Aviation Integration Team Lead, this role reviews subcontractor and vendor calculations, models, and technical documents to ensure compliance with customer, Classification Society, and shipyard requirements.
This role will also assist production and test teams with the installation, testing, and commissioning of complex marine systems, helping resolve technical issues during construction. The position requires work in both office and shipyard environments and involves applying theoretical, practical, and lean engineering principles to provide effective engineering solutions.

Serve as Technical Project manager for vendor scope of supply for the assigned systems.

Interface with shipyard production and planning teams to ensure the outfitting design products adequately reflect facility limitations, capabilities, and build methodology.

Oversee design agent progress of system maturity and design deliverables.

Originate routine or low complexity deliverables including technical specifications, system arrangement drawings, technical reports, and test reports.

Identify opportunities for Continuous Improvement within their engineering discipline.

Author processes and procedures documenting how recurring engineering support and deliverables in their assigned discipline are created.

Identify technical risks and develop mitigation plans for risks associated with their engineering discipline and make risk-based technical decisions.

Assess compliance with technical requirement for systems with their assigned scope.

Interface with Classification Society and RCN customer to obtain approval of functional engineering products.

Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng) or equivalent.
-
2-5 years of relevant work experience, relevant academic or co-op experience in the marine field considered an asset.

Knowledge of ship design and industry standards (Lloyd’s, Transport Canada, IMO).

Ability to manage schedules and meet deadlines.
-
Familiarity with shipyard environments and marine systems.
-
Able to read blueprints and work in 3D ship models.

Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
-
Experience preparing technical documents (drawings, reports, specs).
-
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
-
Comfortable working across teams and making sound technical decisions.
Due to the nature of work Irving Shipbuilding does, all successful applicants must meet requirements for the Canadian Controlled Goods Program (CGP), Canadian Government Security clearance, and U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).
Please note this position requires a full-time, in-office presence.
