About the role
Key Responsibilities:
- Safely operate a commercial waste/recycling collection vehicle, including side-load and/or rear-load trucks, ancillary equipment, and hydraulic systems for waste and recyclables collection.
- Load solid waste or recyclables into the truck, ensuring proper compaction of materials.
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicles, complete daily truck reports, and document route sheets.
- Report any mechanical issues immediately to the mechanic or supervisor.
- Adhere to company safety standards and federal, provincial, and local regulations during the collection process.
- Maintain the cleanliness of the vehicle, both interior and exterior.
- Identify prohibited waste items, tag them, and remove them from the collection cart or can.
- Supervise and support assigned Helper(s) as needed.
- Maintain accurate records of services performed and ensure route quality standards are met.
- Assist with route optimization and efficiency improvements with the supervisor.
- Follow all safety precautions and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Report accidents/incidents to the supervisor immediately.
- Maintain a professional demeanor and appearance when interacting with customers or the public.
- Participate in safety meetings, branch meetings, and other training as required.
Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Valid Class 3 Commercial Driver's License.
- At least 1 year of commercial driving experience.
- Ability to perform safety-sensitive functions per company standards.
- Demonstrated ability to safely operate the truck and associated equipment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies:
- Understanding of truck components and basic maintenance requirements for safe operation.
- Proficient in maneuvering the truck in tight spaces and using mirrors for backing up distances of approximately 120 feet or more.
- Knowledge of identifying and handling unacceptable waste (flammable materials, etc.).
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, to interact with internal and external customers.
- Ability to read and comprehend maps, route sheets, and other relevant documents.
- Flexibility and adaptability in response to changes in work conditions.
- Physical ability to lift, push, pull, or carry objects up to 50 lbs, utilizing proper lifting techniques.
- Ability to follow safety policies and procedures consistently.
Physical and Mental Demands:
- Ability to stand, walk, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, climb, balance, and smell as part of daily tasks.
- Vision requirements: Close vision, distance vision, color vision, and peripheral vision, essential for maneuvering the vehicle in traffic and tight spaces.
- Ability to lift/move up to 10 pounds regularly, 25 pounds frequently, and up to 100 pounds occasionally.
- Sitting may be required up to 75% of the time during vehicle operation.
- Ability to work in loud environments and in varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, etc.).
Working Conditions:
- Frequently exposed to loud noise, extreme temperatures, humidity, and moving mechanical parts.
- Work is primarily conducted outdoors, often in traffic conditions.
- Potential exposure to fumes, toxic chemicals, and airborne particles.
