Are you a recent accounting graduate looking for the opportunity to complete your CPA? Interested in diversifying your knowledge in many of the financial services areas of the public sector? The City of Edmonton has a Chartered Professional Accounting (CPA) pre-approved training program that might be the right opportunity for you! This 30-month rotational training program will give you practical experience in financial reporting, financial analysis for management decision-making and internal audit.
In this position, you will perform increasingly complex work assignments that align with the competence expected throughout the CPA program. Your work placement will consist of multiple rotations with approximately 12 months with Corporate Accounting, Reporting and Policy, 12 months with Business Financial Analytics and Budget and 6 months with the Office of the City Auditor. At the end of 30 months you will be transitioned, through a competitive process, into a suitable permanent accountant position with the City.
Note: The City is reviewing the rotational training program to ensure alignment with the new CPA Professional Program launching in 2027 and will incorporate program requirements accordingly.
What will you do?
Corporate Accounting, Reporting and Policy (~12 months)
- Perform daily, monthly, quarterly and annual financial accounting and reporting
- Prepare, process and record transactions as required
- Apply public sector accounting standards and City accounting policies to daily practices
- Prepare working papers and support for external audit requirements
- Assist in the preparation of the City’s consolidated financial statements
Business Financial Analytics and Budget (~12 months)
- Support operational business partners through the analysis, evaluation and interpretation of financial data, variances, cost drivers and monthly and yearly budget and actuals
- Conduct analysis of data and provide support to the Senior Accountant/Finance Manager by gathering data and developing spreadsheet reports for budget proposals, service packages, recommendations and business cases
- Perform budget consolidation and update information in the City’s budgeting system (Questica Budget)
Office of the City Auditor (~6 months)
- Assist with the audit plan, determining objectives, criteria, risks, scope and work program required to complete the audit
- With the assistance of the Senior Auditor, perform the audit work plan including review of relevant legislation, policies and procedures, analyze operational processes and benchmark the City against external programs
- Document audit findings and opinions for presentation to management
Qualifications:
- Completed Accounting University Degree and registered to start the CPA Professional Education Program (PEP) by August 17, 2026 (Fall 2026 session) or working towards the CPA designation
- 1 year of progressively responsible full cycle (month-end and year-end accounting, budgeting and variance analysis) accounting experience
Assets:
- Knowledge of major financial and analytical software systems and financial systems related to the position (SAP, Questica Budget)
- Knowledge of public sector accounting standards, requirements and practices
- Understanding of acceptable business practices, internal controls and policies within a large corporate environment
Skills required for success:
- Excellent proficiency with Microsoft Applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and Google Applications (Sheets, Docs, etc.)
- Strong conceptual skills, problem solving skills, the ability to work independently and the ability to maintain sustained attention to detail in checking, recording and analyzing financial transactions
- Excellent customer service skills while ensuring adherence to professional standards
- Ability to effectively and clearly communicate and maintain working relationships
- Ability to manage multiple requests and pivot quickly between assignments and tasks
- Ability to commute to various work locations, including outside of the downtown core, as well as the ability to work and train remotely

Work Environment:
- This position works primarily in an office environment
- Note: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52
