About the role

The City of Edmonton’s Safe Mobility Section is looking for a dedicated Automated Enforcement Systems Technician to join our team in achieving Vision Zero—our commitment to eliminating traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries. In this role, you will be at the forefront of maintaining and installing the technology that keeps our streets safe and livable for all community members. As a technical expert, you will ensure our automated enforcement and driver feedback systems are operating at peak performance to support a safer transportation network. Reporting to the Team Lead - Automated Enforcement Technical Support, you will be responsible for the end-to-end technical lifecycle of various automated enforcement systems. This includes the installation, testing, and preventative maintenance of Intersection Safety Devices (ISD), mobile speed enforcement equipment, and Driver Feedback Signs. Part of your work week involves troubleshooting complex software and system integration issues to maintain high system uptime. You will perform electrical wiring work, component replacement and system validation ensuring all systems meet manufacturer specifications, provincial guidelines, and safety codes. You will also document your work thoroughly and conduct mandated Speed Integrity Testing (SIT) to comply with legal requirements. Ultimately, your technical decisions directly impact the reliability of the tools we use to keep Edmontonians safe on our roads.
What will you do?
- Complete daily performance checks of Intersection Safety Device reports and images to ensure optimum system operation
- Conduct on-site Speed Integrity Testing and preventative maintenance on a rotating three-week schedule
- Install new automated enforcement systems, including pole installation, wiring, software configuration, and final commissioning
- Service mobile speed enforcement equipment and Driver Feedback Signs to resolve technical issues or field installation related needs
- Troubleshoot complex electronic, telecommunications, and system integration problems for active enforcement sites
- Document all maintenance, testing, and commissioning activities within the Maintenance Ticketing System and tracking spreadsheets
- Drive a City vehicle equipped with an aerial lift (bucket truck) to access and service equipment in all weather conditions and working on City roadways with traffic control set up
- Evaluate new enforcement technologies and assist in creating technical procedures and training materials for staff
Qualifications:
- Completion of Grade 12
- Completion of an Engineering Technology Diploma in Instrumentation, Telecommunications, Wireless Systems, Electronics, or a related field
- Minimum of 1 year of experience working with a variety of electronic systems
Assets:
- Computer hardware and software certifications or proven experience
- Experience managing installation projects, commissioning work and overseeing contractor productivity
- Eligible for membership as Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) with ASET
Skills required for success:
- Deep knowledge of electrical and electronic principles, including the use of multimeters and power supply systems (120v, 12v)
- Proficiency with communications technology, such as Ethernet, serial communications, and cellular systems
- Strong critical thinking and troubleshooting skills to resolve complex, multi-layered technical scenarios and variable workloads
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining high standards of documentation accuracy and attention to detail
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively with teammates and contractors to resolve issues on-site
- Understand and follow safety procedures and protocols to ensure safety for all workers and citizens while performing required tasks

Conditions of Employment:
- Hire is dependent on a Criminal Records Check (CRC) security clearance that is satisfactory to the City of Edmonton and is a requirement of this position, there may be a cost associated with this requirement
- Possession of a valid Class 5 Alberta Motor Vehicle Operator’s License
- Successful completion of safety training and vendor technical training as required by the section
- Ability to work in a safety-sensitive environment and comply with all City fleet safety standards
- Applicants may be tested
Work Environment:
- This position involves working both indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions, including extreme temperatures and precipitation
- Exposure to vibrations, dust, noise, chemicals, mechanical, electrical and traffic hazards
- On occasion you will be required to lift up to 65 lbs
- The role requires working at heights (using a bucket truck) or ladder, and strenuous tasks such as standing, walking, balancing, kneeling, bending, pulling, reaching
- Working with hand and power tools, soldering iron
- Standard protective equipment, including steel-toed boots, hard hats, and eye protection, is required
