About the role

Location- This role is in-person at North Campus Edmonton, South Campus Edmonton, Campus Saint-Jean, and the University of Alberta Botanic Garden.
Reporting directly to the Construction Superintendent, the Building Envelope Science Assistant provides technical oversight for the management and maintenance of critical building systems, including roofing, glazing, exterior walls, foundations, and vertical transit components. This role is responsible for the direct supervision of external contractors and the guidance of internal shop personnel to ensure the structural integrity of the facility’s exterior shell. By leveraging deep trade knowledge, the Assistant troubleshoots complex issues, promotes the implementation of innovative materials, and maintains rigorous operational standards through the use of enterprise software such as Google Workspace, Assetworks AiM, and SupplyNet.
The successful candidate must be a Safety Champion, proactively fostering a culture of compliance and continuous improvement within the Facility & Operations (F&O) safety program. This position requires high levels of adaptability and organizational agility to manage varying project scales, environmental conditions, and budget constraints. Beyond technical expertise, the role demands strong leadership and teamwork skills to align day-to-day execution with the long-term strategic goals of Trades Infrastructure and Maintenance, ensuring all personnel operate according to the department's mission and core values.

The Vice-President oversees the development and management of campus infrastructure, secure and sustainable IT systems, strategic human resources, financial stewardship and procurement services. The portfolio emphasizes service excellence, operational efficiency and continuous improvement to meet institutional goals.
Key departments reporting to this portfolio include Campus Services; Finance, Planning and Procurement; Human Resources, Health, Safety and Environment; Information Services and Technology; Infrastructure Planning, Development and Partnerships; Internal Audit and Enterprise Risk Management; Shared Services; Strategic Transformation and Delivery; and Utilities and Operations.
Building Envelope Inspection & Support
- Support the Construction Superintendent in developing capital renewal plans and accurate VFA condition reports by performing detailed site inspections, cataloging component inventories, and defining project scopes.
- Coordinate the full lifecycle of building envelope care—from issuing annual preventive maintenance (PM) work orders to troubleshooting repair options and performing hands-on carpentry or investigative labor to prep for major fixes.
- Partner with HSE to champion workplace safety by developing job hazard assessments, safe work practices, and standard operating procedures while maintaining rigorous field inspection reporting.
- Contribute to the roof access program, ensuring adherence to established protocols and safety standards.
Project Coordination
- Guide building envelope renewal, repair, and forensic assessment projects from scope development to final inspection, ensuring high-quality delivery on time and within budget.
- Serve as the primary university contact to collaborate with engineering consultants and the Project Management Office, defining technical requirements and resolving field-level construction challenges.
- Adopt evolving contractor and inventory industry practices while maintaining electronic documentation and retrieval systems to support comprehensive asset management.
- Administer the full lifecycle of external resources and internal personnel, encompassing the recruitment and supervision of specialized contractors (scaffolding, risk mitigation) and seasonal maintenance staff.
Education
- Minimum High School diploma is required
- Must have Interprovincial Red Seal Certificate in carpentry
- Must possess a valid Alberta Class 5 (non-GDL) driver’s license.
- Must be able to provide a recent copy of a three-year driver’s abstract with no more than six (6) demerits and/or two (2) moving violations within the last two years.
Skills
- Exhibit professional written and verbal communication to foster productive working relationships with internal stakeholders, external consultants, and contractors.
- Conceptualize design with a focus on constructability using PDF markup tools and demonstrate an aptitude for mastering enterprise solutions such as AssetWorks AiM, Google Workspace, and Microsoft Office.
- Apply superior organizational and time-management abilities with a meticulous attention to detail while maintaining a self-motivated approach to continuous professional growth.
Knowledge & Experience
- Possess at least five years of experience in building envelope maintenance and renewal, with comprehensive understanding of roofing, glazing, cladding, and foundation assemblies, including the industry-standard repair techniques for each.
- Demonstrate a proven track record in coordinating multiple projects simultaneously, including budget accountability, scheduling, material procurement, and contract administration from inception to job close-out.
- Maintain rigorous standards for contractor performance while applying thorough knowledge of occupational hazards, safe work practices.
- Have hands-on experience with scaffolding, fall arrest, and aerial lift systems.
