About the role

Do you enjoy turning technical drawings into real-world landscapes that improve our city? The Landscape Securities and Inspections unit is seeking motivated Landscape Plan Drafters who are passionate about urban green infrastructure and technical problem-solving.
In this role, you will analyze site landscaping requirements, investigate existing site conditions, and produce revised drawings that resolve deficiencies and bring developments into compliance with City standards, helping ensure Edmonton’s landscapes are functional, resilient, and built to last.
What will you do?
- Produce revised landscape plans, ensuring those plans conform to site budget, development permit conditions, and bylaw requirements
- Review originally approved landscape plans, site inspection reports, oblique aerial imaging technology, and as-built site conditions to verify landscaping requirements and resolve landscaping deficiencies
- Research commercial, industrial, and residential property histories in accordance with established unit procedures for drafting purposes
- Manage a caseload of procurement files, ensuring revised landscape plans are drafted by established deadlines
- Manage and preserve plans and other pertinent documentation in accordance with records management requirements and unit policy
- Support continuous improvement of drafting workflows and templates within the unit
- Conduct preliminary site visits to identify site constraints such as utilities, existing vegetation, hardscaping conflicts, and safety issues to inform landscape plan drafting
- Provide instructions to customers regarding City services and forwarding inquiries as required to the appropriate departments
- Provide education about Zoning Bylaw requirements and unit policies and procedures to customers
Qualifications:
- Completion of a minimum two (2) year diploma with arboricultural emphasis, planning, landscape architectural technology, horticulture or similar fields
- A minimum of two (2) years of direct experience in planning, inspections, horticulture, landscape architecture, architectural technology, landscape construction, enforcement, or similar fields is required. Candidates with less than 2 years of experience may be considered at an opportunity concept level
Skills required for success:
- Ability to identify the nature and severity of landscaping deficiencies on a site as compared to supplied technical drawings, including identifying plant materials, soft landscaping, hardscaping materials, and other elements
- Knowledge and experience with landscaping planning terminology, practices, procedures, and work methods applied within a landscape planning or horticulture environment
- Ability to read and understand regulatory, legal, and statutory documents - including legislation and bylaws governing the business activities of the area such as the Zoning Bylaw
- Proficiency and familiarity with reading and interpreting construction blueprints and Real Property Reports
- Experience applying critical thinking, ethical judgement, and discretion to make decisions based on technical drawings, plans, development conditions, standard operating procedures, and bylaws/legislation
- Strong customer service, communication and conflict resolution skills - with the ability to manage and resolve confrontational situations with professionalism and tact
- Demonstrated ability to build positive relationships and strong partnerships with team members and customers, and the desire to work functionally in a team environment
- Able to handle confidential and sensitive information according to corporate guidelines
- Able to maintain a high standard of safety while visiting development sites
- Exceptional organizational and time management skills with a demonstrated ability to prioritize and re-prioritize high volumes of competing work while maintaining a strong attention to detail
- Proficiency with: Google Suite/Workspace, Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Adobe Pro), drafting programs such as AutoCAD
- Proficiency with enterprise systems including but not limited to POSSE, CORES, and SPIN
- Proficiency with various mapping systems such as Google Earth, EagleView, and SLIM

Conditions of Employment:
- Hire is dependent upon a Police Information Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent); the successful candidate must arrange for their own transportation to be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy; this may require business auto insurance
Work Environment:
- The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance
