Location- This role is in-person at North Campus Edmonton, South Campus Edmonton, and Campus Saint-Jean.

As a key member of the Trades Infrastructure and Maintenance (TIM) team, the Sheet Metal Mechanic plays a critical role in the design, fabrication, installation, and maintenance of sheet metal systems across the University campus. Working within the Utilities and Operations (UTOPS) group, the successful candidate will perform independent work without direct supervision, taking full responsibility for all aspects of their tasks while adhering to SMACNA standards, the National Building Code, and University standards.
The role requires the ability to respond to both routine and emergency maintenance situations. This position involves designing and fabricating custom sheet metal components, assembling and installing air handling systems, and performing troubleshooting and repairs across a uniquely complex and safety-sensitive research and academic environment. A Sheet Metal Mechanic at the University of Alberta must be more diversified and safety conscious than the typical sheet metal mechanic found in construction or manufacturing industries — our staff must be adept in all aspects of the trade.

Operating one of the largest campus district energy systems in North America, the utilities team plays a vital role in maintaining and advancing the infrastructure that serves over 70,000 people daily. Their efforts ensure efficient and sustainable energy services across the campus and greater campus area.

• Design, fabricate, assemble, install, and repair ductwork, fittings, and custom sheet metal projects for heating, ventilating, air conditioning, exhaust systems (including radioactive, chemical, and biohazardous waste air handling facilities), and dust collection systems.
• Perform custom fabrication and repair of flashings, roof drainage systems, restaurant exhaust equipment, dairy and laboratory equipment, access ladders and work platforms, and prototypes and research equipment.
• Use applied mathematical and geometrical principles to develop patterns for air handling fittings and custom sheet metal products, ensuring all legislated codes, standards, and manufacturer requirements are met.
• Fabricate and assemble components using mechanical joints governed by SMACNA and applicable Federal, Provincial, and Local codes, as well as welded joints using CWB-recognized techniques including TIG, MIG, spot welding, stick welding, and acetylene gas welding.
• Derive technical specifications from blueprints, manufacturer's data sheets, WHMIS sheets, and customer orders to determine project requirements and communicate these effectively between shop, field crew, and departmental representatives.
• Make accurate material lists, order materials ahead of project start dates, and employ TIM/UTOPS inventory systems and associated technological solutions for efficient material and supply management.
• Conduct field-level hazard assessments before beginning any task; perform Lock-Out-Tag-Out (LOTO) procedures; and recognize and manage workplace hazards including working from heights, confined spaces, rotating equipment, and areas containing bio, radioactive, chemical hazards, asbestos, or mould.
• Participate in rotational standby shifts to promptly diagnose and resolve sheet metal and mechanical issues, and manage emergencies during off-hours.
• Actively engage in safety initiatives by contributing to meetings, supporting safety program development, and maintaining safety procedures and documentation.

Minimum Qualifications

• Journeyman Sheet Metal Certificate with valid Alberta certification
• High School Diploma
• Passing the Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) welding test; CWB program-specific training and testing must be completed
• Comprehensive understanding of the SMACNA manual, National Building Code, and local regulations
• Up-to-date knowledge of safety protocols, including Lock-Out-Tag-Out (LOTO), field-level hazard assessments, and hazardous substance exposure controls
• Willingness and availability to accommodate rotational standby and emergency call-backs
• Ability to use and interact with electronic devices and software, including computerized maintenance management systems
• Other related certifications as required by trade standards or regulations

Preferred Qualifications

• Extensive experience in commercial or industrial sheet metal environments
• Previous experience working on University of Alberta campuses or similar research and academic environments
• Experience working on radioactive, biohazardous, and toxic chemical exhaust systems, including knowledge of proper system isolation protocols
• Experience with prototype and research equipment fabrication
• Multi-trade exposure or additional experience in areas outside the core sheet metal trade that enhance overall performance
• Strong aptitude for enterprise software, including AssetWorks AiM or equivalent computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS)
• Familiarity with Google Workspace (Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets) and Microsoft Office Suite
