About the role
Our client is seeking an Assistant Controller to oversee day‑to‑day accounting operations, strengthen internal controls, and mentor a small accounting team within a professional‑services environment that includes general and trust accounting. The ideal candidate will bring strong technical accounting capability, proven experience supervising accounting staff, and a track record of improving processes and documentation.
Your Success Will Be Defined By Your Ability To
- Lead, coach, and cross‑train a small team of accounting clerks while fostering collaboration and accountability
- Oversee daily accounting operations, including AP/AR, GL maintenance, write‑offs, disbursements, and month‑end procedures
- Complete high‑volume bank and credit card reconciliations and ensure trust accounting accuracy and compliance
- Produce clear, on‑time financial reporting packages (weekly, monthly, quarterly, annual, and ad hoc) with variance analysis and practical recommendations
- Maintain robust documentation and internal controls that align with regulatory and professional requirements
- Support indirect tax filings and year‑end activities for both general and trust ledgers
- Provide responsive service to internal stakeholders and external partners, including banking relationships
- Drive process improvements and workflow automation to increase accuracy and efficiency
- Act as finance systems lead—troubleshoot issues, train users, and support an upcoming accounting system upgrade
Your strengths include:
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 2 years in a supervisory capacity
- Post‑secondary education in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline; CPA completed or in progress considered an asset
- Demonstrated full‑cycle accounting experience, including GL, reconciliations, statements, and close routines
- Hands‑on trust accounting exposure and familiarity with compliance in a professional‑services context
- Advanced Excel proficiency and confidence working with accounting/ERP software (experience documenting SOPs and improving processes)
- Clear written and verbal communication skills with a service mindset and the ability to build productive relationships
- High attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the agility to adapt to shifting priorities in a dynamic environment
