ABOUT THE ROLE

We are seeking a highly motivated Park Ranger with excellent communication skills and a passion for outdoor settings to join our team! Under the direction of the Senior Manager, Moose Lake and Park Ranger Program, the Park Ranger helps protect the Moose Lake and Namur Lake reserve land and supports Fort McKay First Nation members who practice their Treaty Rights on those lands. Supporting the Park Ranger Program, this front-line, service focused position facilitates safe and positive community and visitor experiences and acts as ambassadors to protect Fort McKay’s natural and cultural heritage. This entry-level position introduces incumbents to a career in conservation and is the beginning career pathway of becoming a Park Ranger with Peace Officer designation. This is a permanent full-time position, working 7 days on and 7 days off, 12 hours per shift.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Conduct patrols and provide a level of comfort to community members so they can enjoy their time on reserve lands.

• Foster a stewardship ethic, encouraging compliance and supporting issue resolution through information sharing and education.

• Provide assistance to road users.

• Enhance visitor camping and recreation experiences by monitoring visitor conduct.

• Register and report occurrences and incidents.

• Conduct regular patrols to collect information related to trespassing and any illegal activity in the area.

• Maintain a database of crucial information that can be used to direct future actions for traditional land use studies.

• Monitoring site conditions and nuisance/problem wildlife.

• Provide information to mitigate future wildlife conflicts, and assist in human/wildlife conflict situations, when required.

• Assist in emergency situations.

• Deal with confidential and sensitive information in accordance with First Nation policies, procedures, and best practice standards.

• When assigned, assist Park Ranger Peace Officers and Protective Services branch staff with projects or tasks.

• Provide for the basic maintenance and cleanliness of work vehicle.

• Wear issued protective equipment and keep uniform in a neat and tidy appearance.

• Maintain professional standards of FMFN by following all policies and procedures and adhere to all occupational health and safety requirements.

• Perform other related duties as required.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

• Completion of Grade 12 or GED equivalent is required.

• Some experience and knowledge in Fort McKay Reserve Lands and its traditional uses is required.

• Preference will be given to candidates with related experience in the Natural Resources, Natural Sciences, Recreation Management, Tourism Development, hunting, trapping, animal behaviour and handling, or other related areas.

• Experience working and living in an outdoor setting is an asset (i.e. hunter, trapper).

• Must be willing and able to complete the below required training within two (2) years of hire, and would be considered an asset if already obtained:

  • Valid Possession and Acquisition License
  • ATV operations

  • Pleasure Craft Operators Certification
  • WHMIS
  • Bylaw Enforcement and (Boating license)
  • Snowmobile operations
  • Investigative Skills course
  • Wilderness First Aid

  • Trapping
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
  • Trailer operations
  • Transportation of dangerous goods
  • (CPR) certificate

• Must be able to pass a Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation (PARE) Test within six (6) months of hire.

• Must be willing and able to attain a Peace Officer appointment through the Alberta Solicitor General.

• Knowledge of Fort McKay Reserve Lands and its traditional uses, Experience working in a First Nations community is a definite asset.

• Good physical fitness to move with ease throughout - sitting, standing, walking intervals.

• Experience working and living in an outdoor setting is an asset (such as Hunting, Trapping, or knowledge of the traditional territory)

• Ability to work in all weather conditions, isolated conditions, lake environments, and rugged terrain.

• Ability to work shift work, including weekends and evenings. Traveling between Fort McKay and Moose Lake will be necessary, consisting of overnight stays at Moose Lake as required.

• Ability to provide a Clean Criminal Record Check

• Must have a Class 5 Drivers license and clear drivers abstract for vehicle insurance purposes

• Ability to speak Cree or Dene is an asset

• Further training and certifications may be required for the position and would be considered an asset to this position if already obtained
