Standardized Patient Trainer

Unit/Project Description: Education Services in the Faculty of Health Sciences requires a Standardized Patient Trainer. This position is responsible for training of individuals to act as Standardized Patients (SPs) for use in educational programs as well as external users seeking to train or remediate health care workers and other employees. This position is located at the Waterloo Regional Campus of the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine, on the downtown Kitchener, University of Waterloo Health Sciences Campus.
Please note that this is a shared position between McMaster University and the University of Waterloo School of Pharmacy.
Job Summary: Responsible for the recruitment, hiring, and training of individuals to act as Standardized Patients (SPs) employed by McMaster University for use in educational programs as well as external users seeking to train or remediate health care workers and other employees.
Purpose and Key Functions:
- Recruit, hire and train individuals to act as Standardized Patients (SPs) who portray various physical and psychological conditions and illnesses.
- Ensure that all Standardized Patients are trained in medical simulation and in communication skills feedback.
- Collect and collate quality performance data and standardized patient cases.
- Assist in the planning of Objective Structure Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) by ensuring that Standardized Patients are trained and available to participate in the examinations.
- Correspond with internal and external client regarding the use of Standardized Patients in academic programs.
- Conduct database and literature searches to locate material in a specific field or speciality.
- Compile information on policies and procedures of other institutions for the purpose of recommending, adapting and developing new policies and procedures for the Standardized Patient program.
- Provide applicants with program policy and procedure information.
- Facilitate training sessions and information workshops for Standardized Patients.
- Meet with internal and external clients to gather and discern educational and operational goals required to assign and develop the appropriate simulation sessions to suit their needs.
- Perform clinical skills procedures such as reflex and simulation testing on Standardized Patients as a means of accurately and adequately preparing them for simulation sessions.
- Attend and participate in meetings.
- Participate with a team in the design and development of a program newsletter.
- Plan, coordinate, and schedule the training and placement of Standardized Patients for a variety of licensing examinations and Objective Structure Clinical Examinations.
- Provide clients with estimates of the cost of using Standardized Patients and consult with user programs to ensure the appropriate amount resources are assigned to meet project deadlines.
- Recommend and implement program policies and procedures on the use of Standardized Patients, booking processes and quality assurance.
- Prepare sites for national exams including site set up, outsourcing equipment, scheduling and training staff, and acting as a point of contact on exam days to resolve onsite issues.
- Calculate payroll for Standardized Patients employed for national licensing exams, travel expense forms, and quotes to potential program users.
Supervision:
- Ensure adherence to quality standards and procedures for short-term staff and volunteers.
- Provide orientation and show procedures to others.
Qualifications:
- 2 year Community College diploma in a relevant field of study.
- Requires 3 years of relevant work experience.
Assets:
- Knowledge of the University of Waterloo Pharmacy program would be an asset.
Additional Information:
Position requirements:
- Experience planning/coordinating education events and/or theatrical experience.
- Experience with Mosaic/PeopleSoft finance and HR applications.
- Previous experience recruiting, scheduling, and training individuals in a clinical or educational setting.
- Working knowledge and understanding of adult educational training.
- Experience liaising with client groups and providing clients with estimates of costs for various services.
- Experience planning, coordinating, scheduling, preparing sites, and acting as a point of contact at education events and/or exams.
- Proven ability to express various physical and psychological conditions and illnesses clearly and simply to non-technical persons.
- The ability to work under pressure and reliably meet deadlines; work with minimal supervision; work effectively in a team environment with healthcare professionals; and demonstrate initiative and creativity by adapting to a highly dynamic environment.
This position may require you to work outside of your regular work schedule including evenings and weekends to meet operational demands. Travel is required between a variety of sites including Hamilton & Niagara.
