We are currently accepting applications forCustodian. Under the supervision of the Facilities Operations Manager and the direction of the Head or Lead Custodian, the Custodian is responsible for the appearance of the building and operation of a specific worksite. The Custodian works as a member of a larger team composed of the custodial staff of multiple worksites, such as a family of schools. The Principal may provide direction to the Custodian within the school in conjunction with the Facilities Operations Manager.

Qualifications and Experience:
- A secondary school diploma with a minimum of six months cleaning and general maintenance experience in a school facility is required.
- Demonstrated experience in small equipment repair and maintenance is an asset.
- The successful candidate may be required to obtain specific courses and/or certifications relevant to his or her worksite(s) such as water treatment certificate, lockout / tag out, fall arrest, WHMIS, etc. within a specific period after hiring and/or during the period of employment.
- Enrolment in or successful completion of the Building Environmental Systems (BES) courses are an asset.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle is required.
SKILLS REQUIRED:
Technical

Working knowledge of basic cleaning methods

Demonstrated ability to recognize and detect problems for repair

Basic knowledge of painting, mechanical and plumbing

Basic knowledge of minor building and equipment maintenance, repairs and adjustments

Demonstrated ability to operate cleaning equipment

Demonstrated ability to safely use ladders and lifts inside and outside of building

Familiarity with word processing software, e-mail and Internet applications
Regulation and Compliance
- Some knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, WHMIS and related regulations
- Demonstrated ability to effectively comprehend manuals, safety guidelines
- Ability to learn new systems and processes
- Awareness of confined spaces procedures and/or restricted areas
- Ability to understand requirement for privacy, to respect confidentiality of information, and to practice tact and diplomacy
Communication and Personal
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, written and oral, with public, visitors, contractors, staff, students, supervisor, co-workers and administration
- Demonstrated ability to accept changing conditions and continuous improvements; adaptable and receptive to new ideas and change
- Ability to work well with a variety of people and respond to special needs and requests
Organization, Management and Leadership

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES(Any or all of the following)
Operations
-
Performs custodial duties (i.e. dusts, washes and polishes office and classroom furnishings, washes, cleans and disinfects washroom facilities, vacuums, sweeps and mops floors, as required)

Strips, waxes and cleans all floors as required, maintains floors through surface cleaning, spray buffing and polishing

Replenishes basic classroom and washroom supplies

Washes windows, ceilings, walls and light fixtures, as required

Empties waste baskets and removes trash

Operates cleaning equipment to carry out custodial tasks

Moves furniture, equipment and supplies, as required
-
Performs preventative building maintenance (painting), repairs and adjustments

Works in other buildings as assigned to meet operational needs -Application:
