2026-054 FT Problem Gambling Counsellor (FLS), External
Job Summary:
The Problem Gambling Counsellor is responsible for providing direct service, awareness and education to clients with a gambling problem. The position also involves working with families of youth age 12 and older on gaming and gambling issues.
The Problem Gambling Counsellor is also responsible for in-service training to staff on problem gambling issues, as well as providing education and presentations with community partners for problem gambling and gaming. All services are provided in accordance with the mission, vision, values and established protocols of the Agency, the Program and the principles of psychosocial rehabilitation.
This position is FLS Designated
As such, the Problem Gambling Counsellor for French Language Services is responsible for providing services to clients in English and French and works collaboratively within the team on supporting French-speaking clients outside of their assigned case load. The incumbent may also be asked to support French-speaking clients of other programs of the agency as required. Travel may be required to all KFL&A sites.
Note: If the competition is unsuccessful for a French Language Services individual, applicants without proficiency in French language will be considered at that time. As such, all applicants are invited to apply.
Minimum Qualifications:

Oral French Language proficiency at the Advanced level, in accordance with the provincial standard.

University Degree in health-related discipline

Post-graduate training in problem gambling
-
Current Canadian Problem Gambling Certification, an asset.

Two years’ relevant experience providing services in the field of problem gambling

Current unrestricted registration with applicable regulatory body

Knowledge and/ or experience in community development, assessment and counselling
-
Certification in First Aid and CPR, an asset
-
Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training, an asset
-
Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training, an asset
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Demonstrated knowledge of problem gambling and addictions
- Knowledge of group and individual settings, assessment, counseling and referral in the field of problem gambling and addictions
- Knowledge of and ability to apply problem gambling and addictions evidence-based practices and procedures as they relate to the client, within a client-centered approach
- Knowledge of Problem Gambling Treatment facilities within Ontario and referral processes
- Knowledge of and ability to apply Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Recovery principles
- Ability to effectively utilize community resources and supports to meet the needs of clients
- Ability to work under pressure within a changing environment
- Knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Personal Health Information Protection Act and other relevant legislation
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in order to effectively engage community services and individuals, increasing awareness of services
- Well-developed problem-solving, prioritization and conflict resolution skills
- Ability to work autonomously as well as collaboratively in a team environment
- Basic proficiency in computer skills; MS Office preferred
- Ability to work flexible hours, and including evenings and weekends
- Other duties as required.
- Must possess a valid Ontario Driver’s License and have regular access to a reliable vehicle and provide proof of $2,000,000 vehicle insurance. Incumbent may be required to transport clients.
- Required to provide a satisfactory criminal reference check (CRC) with Vulnerable Sector Screening prior to hire.
