POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Delegated Team Leader, the Post Majority Worker is a key point of contact and resource for young adults and youth who have reached the age of majority and have left care. The Post Majority Worker (PMW) is responsible for supporting young adults in their successful transition out of the child welfare system into adulthood and independence. The PMW will help young adults to develop and pursue their goals, and will support them to identify, access, and navigate adult service systems relevant to their specific needs. The PMW will also support young adults to connect to existing supports and resources within their communities including, housing supports, education resources, employment services and training, life skills training (e.g., financial management (including tax supports), household management), health and mental health services, and legal services.

Post Majority Worker supports young adults in their transition to adulthood by providing continuity of service, a connection to a broad range of adult government, community and cultural supports and services, and access to financial supports post-19 years of age. The PMW ensures the right people are brought together to collectively plan, make decisions, and commit to actions that best support the transition of young adults to adulthood. PMW collaborates with other ministry staff to support relational and cultural stability, assist young adults to consider and plan for their future goals, and support the management and updating of the transition plan.

They operate within the parameters provided by the BC Child, Family and Community Services Act and the Aboriginal Operational and Practice Standards and Indicators (AOPSI), and use a solution focussed and trauma informed practice framework in their work with youth, families, and communities.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

• Degree in an identified human services field (Psychology, Sociology, Criminology, Anthropology, Early Childhood Education, Theology, Indigenous Studies, Education, or Nursing)

• A Diploma in an identified human services field plus 1 year of relevant experience is reserved for candidates who voluntarily self-identify as Indigenous.

• Minimum of 1 years' experience working with vulnerable youth and young adults with complex needs including issues of substance abuse, mental illness, homelessness, or youth in or formerly from ministry care will be considered.

• Must be delegated or eligible for C3 delegation in Province of B.C.

• Knowledge and appreciation of Indigenous culture and historical impacts that effect the development of individuals and communities.

• Valid BC Driver’s Class 5 License (no restrictions); reliable transportation with adequate vehicle insurance.

• Criminal records check required.

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

• Assists in the coordination and development of transition plans for youth over 19 who have left or are preparing to leave care.

• Collaborates with Guardianship Social worker for transition to be fully independent.

• Conducts needs based assessments with young adults seeking supports to inform transition planning and works with clients through the implementation of their plan. Works in collaboration with other ministry staff to ensure the transition plan is updated and reviewed on a regular basis.

• Provides and recommends resources and supports to young adults transitioning to independence and connects them to a broad range of adult government, community and cultural supports and services.

• Provides support to young adults to build stronger connections with their extended family, culture and/or Indigenous communities, or others from their community.

• Supports young adults to establish long-term living arrangements that allows them to maintain connections to family, community, and culture.

• Maintains an awareness of community resources that can be utilized to provide support to young adults.

• Maintains required program administrative records.

• Acts as a liaison, supports and implements group-based facilitation to ensure independence in our young adults.

• Ensure agreements are accurate and signed.

• Ability to practice standards set out in the B.C. Child, Family and Community Services Act, and the Aboriginal Operational and Practice Standards and Indicators (AOPSI) Manual.

• Other duties as assigned.

SKILLS & ABILITIES:

• Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to write concise reports for various audiences.

• Knowledge of the community and available resources, both locally and provincially.

• Ability to work collaboratively with ministry, staff, and stakeholder to support the development of the youth’s transition plan prior to youth leaving the care of the ministry.

• Ability to understand diversity within Indigenous communities and build relationships with community stakeholders and Indigenous communities.

• Demonstrated ability to lead and facilitate emotionally charged meetings/situations while working collaboratively with the family and community.

• Ability to demonstrate strong conflict resolution skills.

• Ability to form trusting, respectful and effective relationships with children, Indigenous communities, caregivers, parents, and other FVACFSS employees.

• Ability to embed solution-focused practices such as Signs of Safety or Appreciative Inquiry.

• Demonstrate ability to balance competing priorities and work under pressure.

• Computer skills for Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

• May be required to work flexible hours (work evenings/weekends).

• May be required to travel in remote locations to Indigenous communities.
