**Location:**Lax Kw'alaams, British Columbia
**Reporting to:**School Principal
Lax Kw'alaams Wap Suwilaawksa School is a vibrant K–12 learning community that integrates academic excellence with Tsimshian culture and language. Our dedicated staff work together to create meaningful, engaging, and inclusive learning experiences for students while supporting the values and traditions of the Lax Kw'alaams community.
The Lax Kw'alaams Wap Suwilaawksa School is seeking a passionate and dedicated English and Arts Teacher to join our instructional team until June, 2026, with a possibility of returning in September, 2026. We are looking for educators with diverse teaching strengths and interests who are committed to fostering a positive and culturally enriched learning environment. Candidates must be flexible and prepared to teach a variety of subjects, depending on the school's educational needs.
Responsibilities:_

General
- Plan, prepare, and deliver instruction consistent with the BC Curriculum and local cultural programming
- Integrate Tsimshian language and culture into classroom lessons through collaboration with Elders and community members
- Create engaging, differentiated lessons that meet the diverse learning needs of all students
- Provide classroom supervision and effective classroom management
- Work collaboratively with colleagues, including Special Education Teachers, to support students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs)
- Assess, record, and report on student progress regularly
- Communicate effectively with parents, guardians, and community members
- Participate in school-wide initiatives, professional learning, and extra-curricular activities
- Maintain accurate records of attendance, planning, and assessment
- Engage in continuous professional development and contribute to a collaborative school culture
- Note: Perform all other duties within the scope of the position and as requested by the School Principal or Designate
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education
- Valid BC Teacher Regulation Branch certification, or a teaching certificate in good standing issued by a provincial education authority or a recognized Canadian teacher certification authority
- Bachelor of Education or equivalent post-secondary degree
Experience
- Experience developing and implementing curriculum and instructional resources
- Experience teaching in a First Nations school or community (asset)

- Understanding and appreciation of Indigenous culture and history
- Computer literacy and ability to integrate technology in the classroom
- Excellent classroom management and instructional skills
- Strong communication, organization, and collaboration abilities
- Creative and adaptable, with the ability to teach across multiple subjects and grades
- Respectful and sensitive to First Nations culture, values, and traditions
- Commitment to student-centered learning and culturally responsive teaching
- Dependable, flexible, and professional in all interactions
Physical Demands and Working Environment:
Physical Demand
- You may have to spend long hours sitting and using office equipment and computers and attending meetings
- You may have to spend long hours standing when teaching a class or assisting in other school related activities
Mental Demands
- You will have to complete several tasks and responsibilities at one time and must be prepared to deal with emergencies and stressful situations at any time
Condition of Employment
- You must be willing to relocate to either Prince Rupert or Lax Kw'alaams. If residing in Prince Rupert, you will commute via a complimentary water taxi. Alternatively, you may choose to live in the village with access to low-cost, fully furnished rental housing/apartment
- You will adhere to the Lax Kw'alaams Band Code of Conduct, Code of Confidentiality, Social Media Policy and any other Policies in the Human Resource Manual
- Follow all guidelines harmoniously and cooperatively, creating a team approach in their duties for the Lax Kw'alaams Band and the Lax Kw'alaams Wap Suwilaawksa School future success
- Acceptable Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search
- Valid Driver's License (Class 5) is an asset
Classification/Pay Scale
- $70,108.55 to $127,308 per year
- As per the B.C. General Employees' Union Collective Agreement
- You can expect a supportive work environment along with a comprehensive total compensation package. This includes a competitive salary, extended health and dental benefits, and a pension plan with contributions of up to 5%, matched by the employer
- Moving Allowance: Up to $5,000 will be reimbursed upon submission of receipts, based on the actual amount spent
