The Lax Kw'alaams Wap Suwilaawksa School is seeking a passionate and dedicated Guidance Counselor to join our team in September, 2026. We are looking for educators with diverse teaching strengths and interests who are committed to fostering a positive and culturally enriched learning environment.
Responsibilities:General
- Provide academic, career, and personal counseling to students; monitor student progress and identify areas needing support
- Help students set educational and career goals; develop and implement individualized academic plans, follow up to make sure students are on track and assist them if they are not
- Guide students in college, university and career planning; assist students with course selection and scheduling; interpret academic test results and transcripts
- Assist with college applications, scholarships, and financial aid information
- Prepare course schedules per semester and as per students need
- Co-ordinate co-op programs, school-to-work transition programs, professional development sessions and student exchanges
- Counsel students on personal, emotional, or social issues; support students facing learning challenges
- Provide crisis intervention when necessary; teach coping, conflict resolution, and decision-making skills
- Work closely with teachers, parents, and administrators; refer students to external professionals or agencies when needed
- Work with the Education Department to organize workshops, career fairs, and informational sessions; develop and co-ordinate groups and workshops on topics such as note-taking, time management, exam anxiety and test preparation
- Analyze data to improve counseling programs
- Maintain accurate student documentation and reports and maintain confidential student records
- Ensure compliance with school policies and educational regulations
- Promote positive behavior and mental wellness
- Note: Perform all Other duties within the scope of the position and as requested by the School Principal or Designate****
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Counseling, Psychology, or related field
- Bachelor of Education or equivalent post-secondary degree is an asset
Experience****
- 2–5+ years of experience in school counseling or related field (preferred)
- Experience working with students in elementary, middle, or high school settings
- Proven experience in academic advising and career guidance
- Experience handling student behavioral and emotional concerns
- Familiarity with crisis intervention and conflict resolution
- Experience teaching in a First Nations school or community (asset)

- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with professionalism and discretion
- Ability to support students through emotional, social, and academic challenges
- Ability to respond effectively in crisis or high-stress situations
- Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, and external service providers
- Ability to adapt approaches to meet diverse cultural and individual needs

- Resilient and able to maintain composure in challenging situations

Condition**of**Employment****
- You must be willing to relocate to either Prince Rupert or Lax Kw'alaams. If residing in Prince Rupert, you will commute via a complimentary water taxi. Alternatively, you may choose to live in the village with access to low-cost, fully furnished rental housing/apartment
- You will adhere to the Lax Kw'alaams Band Code of Conduct, Code of Confidentiality, Social Media Policy and any other Policies in the Human Resource Manual
- Follow all guidelines harmoniously and cooperatively, creating a team approach in their duties for the Lax Kw'alaams Band and the Lax Kw'alaams Wap Suwilaawksa School future success
- Acceptable Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search
- Valid Driver's License (Class 5) is an asset
Classification/PayScale
- $70,108.55 to $127,308 per year
- As per the B.C. General Employees' Union Collective Agreement
- You can expect a supportive work environment along with a comprehensive total compensation package. This includes a competitive salary, extended health and dental benefits, and a pension plan with contributions of up to 5%, matched by the employer
- Moving Allowance: Up to $5,000 will be reimbursed upon submission of receipts, based on the actual amount spent
