Department Description
London Health Sciences Centre is a College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) approved host for participants in the Supervised Practice Experience Partnership (SPEP) Program.
This program is for Nurses who are:
- Registered with CNO in the Non-Practicing Class and who have been away from practice for more than three (3) years, but less than five (5) years
- Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) seeking registration with the CNO as Registered Nurses (RNs) or Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs)
In this program, you will be matched with a preceptor to complete your 140 hours for the duration of your 3-month contract.
Benefits for nurses in the program:
- Provides an opportunity for participants to gain the experience needed to practice nursing in Ontario
- Allows participants to demonstrate entry-to-practice competencies required for safe practice in Ontario
- Paid internship with financial support from Ontario Health
- Provides opportunities for practical work experience at London Health Sciences Centre Successful participants have the opportunity to apply internally for posted nursing positions upon the completion of full registration with the CNO
Qualifications
Nurses/ Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) Participating in this program must:
- Be approved by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) before commencing the experience and must provide a letter of direction from CNO stating eligibility
- Be registered with the CNO in the Non-Practicing Class and who have been away from their practice for more than three (3) years, but less than five (5) years OR be an Internationally Educated Nurse (IEN) seeking registration with CNO as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Practical Nurse (RPN)
- Have the Transition to Practice requirement marked as "Met" on CNO profile
- Provide Proof of current Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers certificate: BLS-HCP (C)
- Practice under the supervision of a nurse in the appropriate category or class of registration (RN, RPN)
- Successfully complete a minimum of 140 hours worked
- Ability to read, write, comprehend, and communicate effectively in English
- Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the position, including bending, lifting, twisting, etc.
- Excellent communication abilities and interpersonal skills to interact positively and effectively with patients, staff, and the general public
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize multiple and changing tasks that require attention to detail
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of a team
- Demonstrated practice and commitment to the principles of patient/family centred care with a service-oriented attitude
- Demonstrated computer proficiency, basic computer and keyboarding skills
- Ability to problem-solve and demonstrate initiative within appropriate scope of practice
- Demonstrated knowledge of protocol to escalate concerns
- Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Demonstrated practice and commitment to patient and staff safety at LHSC
- Demonstrated practice and commitment to LHSC's vision, purpose, and values
- Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis
