About the role
SD10, in the beautiful West Kootenay region of southeastern BC, is situated on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Sinixt, Sylix, Ktunaxa, and Secwepemc Peoples. We are seeking a reliable, kind and motivated Food Service Assistant to support the food program at Lucerne Elementary Secondary School. The Food Service Assistant assists with the operation of school meal and snack programs, including preparing and serving food, maintaining food safety, and maintaining food records.
This is a 20 hour per week 10 month per year regular position effective September 8, 2026. Actual daily hours of work will be in consultation with the Principal. The wage for this position is $29.84/hr as per the Collective Agreement between the Board of School Trustees for School District 10 (Arrow Lakes) and the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 2450.
Job Responsibilities
Performs food preparation, following FoodSafe and BC School Food Toolkit, using recipes, weighing and measuring foods, using appropriate terminology, and following other cooking best practices. Collaborates with the School Administration to support students with diverse dietary needs. Maintains a clean work area by washing and cleaning kitchen area, supplies, and equipment. Stores excess food and supplies and replaces items in storage areas. Receives, stores, and rotates incoming food supplies and materials and records inventory of food supplies and materials. Operates domestic and commercial grade equipment such as blender, stove, flat top, oven, microwave, and dishwasher. Washes, dries, and stores kitchen dishes and laundry. Assists with menu planning and ordering food supplies and materials.
Required Qualifications And Experience
Grade 12 or equivalent Valid FOODSAFE Level 1 certification Minimum 6 months of recent commercial food preparation experience Strong communication skills (verbal, written) and ability to maintain positive working relationships with staff, students, and family members Ability to follow written instructions and recipes, making measurement conversions if required Basic computer skills such as email and online ordering Training in allergy awareness or anaphylaxis considered an asset Physical capacity to unload and stock up to 20lbs Valid BC driver’s license and access to a vehicle
