About the role
Department: Acute Inpatient Psychiatry Unit
QUALIFICATIONS
Certification/Experience/Knowledge:
- Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) required
- Current certification of Registration from Ontario College of Certified Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW) required
- Two (2) years significant experience in a hospital setting, mental health/psychiatric services and knowledge of and experience with coordination of community services required
- Facilitate and participate in appropriate patient care planning, attend daily multidisciplinary rounds, and case conferences as required to address patient needs and service requirements and/or delays that could impede patient flow and discharge
- Demonstrated knowledge relating to Community Care Access Centres (CCAC), Patient Classification System (PCS), Homes for Special Care, Association for Community Living, and Decision Support and utilization required
- Excellent conceptual protocol knowledge of relevant legislation including (but not limited to) the Mental Health Act and the Long-Term Care Act is required
- Commitment to continuous learning and quality improvement
- Must possess excellent communication skills and be able to verbally communicate with patients, physicians, program staff and other stakeholders
Skills/Abilities:
- Excellent interpersonal interviewing and counselling skills required
- Proven interpersonal negotiation and problem-solving skills to establish and maintain positive working relationships with clients, program staff and community agencies
- Knowledge of the agencies and organizations that support clients with mental health, developmental and cognitive concerns in the community
- Demonstrated application of discharge planning principles and resource utilization is required
- Coordinate and assist in communicating discharge plans to patients, families, health care team and the community partners
- Counsel patients and families regarding concerns related to their hospital admission and discharge to ensure consistency of messaging and continuity of care
- Must be able to work with minimum supervision, capable of making timely decisions and exercising tact and good judgement
- Ability to work in a fast-paced working environment and deal effectively with emergent situations
- Ability to be able to organize and prioritize patient needs and be flexible to changing demands
- Excellent computer skills and ability to write clear and accurate reports in a timely manner required
- Must have the ability to function as a member of a multi-disciplinary heath care team
- Must demonstrate commitment to ensure your safety, the safety of fellow workers, patients, volunteers and visitors
- Must support and contribute to a culture of safety and prevention of adverse health events in this organization
- Good attendance and work record required
- Bilingualism (Advanced level English/French) is an asset

About North Bay Regional Health Centre
The North Bay Regional Health Centre (NBRHC) is a unique healthcare organization with three primary roles. It provides acute care services to North Bay and its surrounding communities, it is the district referral centre providing specialist services for smaller communities in the area, and it is the specialized mental health service provider serving all of northeast Ontario
NBRHC has 389 beds and numerous outpatient and outreach services in North Bay and throughout the northeast region.
NBRHC is one of four major acute care hospitals serving northeast Ontario; the others being Sault Area Hospital, Timmins and District Hospital and Health Sciences North (Sudbury). The area is also served by small community hospitals like Mattawa and West Nipissing General hospitals.
NBRHC’s Regional Mental Health Services provides inpatient beds in North Bay and Sudbury and outpatient and outreach services that throughout the region—from Hudson Bay to Muskoka from Sault Ste. Marie to the Quebec border.
