About the Role While the ideal candidate would possess the experience and qualifications below, candidates with substantial experience in civil construction are encouraged to apply.
The Construction department has a vacancy for a 6-month temporary full-time Works Inspector 2. This position is predominantly an in-field role involved in overseeing the construction and maintenance of civil infrastructure such as: underground utilities (storm, sanitary, water, etc.), roads, concrete, curbs and sidewalks, retaining walls, in-stream work (culverts, debris basins, etc.), bridges, and any other municipal civil infrastructure. Depending on the project structure this role can be responsible for any combination of: construction and project management, project coordination, contract administration, inspection, quality assurance, site monitoring, cost-estimating, budget forecasting, contract quantity verification, preparation of contract documents and reports, and managing project stakeholders (including the general public). While generally working under the guidance of senior field staff this position entails operating with minimal supervision and the exercising of independent judgement. Performance is evaluated in terms of accuracy, effectiveness, sound judgement and adherence to inspectional best-practices.
The successful applicant will possess:
-
Sound knowledge of basic engineering principles and civil construction methods, best-practices, materials, tools and equipment as well as the methods and techniques used in inspecting and regulating civil construction projects.
-
The ability to enforce compliance to plans and specifications with impartiality, determine quality of materials and workmanship through inspection and recommend corrective measures where required.
-
The ability to read and interpret plans, specifications and other related technical documents and to establish sound working relationships with contractors, colleagues and the general public.
-
The ability to function effectively with minimal direct supervision and the proven capacity to exercise initiative, self-reliance and sound judgement.
-
The ability to prepare reports and maintain records related to work performed and skill in the use of inspectional, testing, drafting and survey tools.
Qualifications Completion of the 12th grade supplemented by relevant training and experience in civil construction and project/construction management. Technical courses related to the work performed are considered an asset. Certification (or eligibility) as an MMCD Contract Administrator and a designation (or eligibility) from the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC (ASTTBC) are preferred qualifications.
