Civil Supervisor

We are currently seeking a Civil Supervisor to join our growing Sutherland Group team, based in the Southern Okanagan and Kootenays region, with opportunities for shift work for the right candidate. This is a key leadership opportunity for an experienced construction professional with strong expertise in civil infrastructure and field operations.

As Superintendent, you will be responsible for leading and executing construction projects from start to finish, ensuring alignment with schedules, budgets, and quality standards. You will play a critical role in driving project success by coordinating field teams, subcontractors, and internal stakeholders while maintaining a strong focus on safety and operational excellence.

You will oversee site operations across a range of civil construction projects, including underground utilities, earthworks, and road building. This role requires a hands-on leader who can effectively manage crews, solve problems in real time, and deliver high-quality results in fast-paced environments.

Construction leadership experience is essential for success in this role. We are looking for someone who understands the complexities of field operations and can confidently lead teams while maintaining strong client relationships and project performance.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Champion a strong “Safety First” culture by leading crews and ensuring compliance with all safety policies and site-specific plans.
• Plan, coordinate, and execute construction projects to meet schedules, milestones, and critical deadlines.
• Lead and manage field operations, including crews, subcontractors, and equipment resources.
• Monitor project performance, including productivity, costs, and timelines, and implement corrective actions as needed.
• Interpret contracts and identify scope changes, risks, and project impacts.
• Collaborate closely with Project Managers to ensure seamless project execution and client satisfaction.
• Resolve on-site challenges proactively, including scheduling conflicts and operational issues.
• Support job costing, forecasting, and reporting to drive informed decision-making.
• Mentor and develop foremen and junior team members, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and accountability.
• Participate in project planning, estimating support, and pre-construction activities as required.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, partners, and stakeholders.
• Contribute to operational improvements, efficiency initiatives, and best practices across projects.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

As a member of the Sutherland Group team, we expect you to bring the following to the table:

• Minimum 6+ years of leadership experience in the construction industry, with a strong focus on field operations.
• Proven experience delivering civil infrastructure projects, including underground utilities, earthworks, and road building.
• Strong understanding of various soil conditions and construction environments.
• Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects from initiation to completion.
• Experience coordinating multiple crews, subcontractors, and project stakeholders.
• Solid understanding of contract administration, project scheduling, and cost control.
• Knowledge of provincial safety regulations and construction best practices.
• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to adapt in fast-paced environments.
• Excellent communication and leadership skills.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel) and other project management tools.
• Technical diploma or degree in engineering or a related field is considered an asset.
