JOB DESCRIPTION
The City of Orillia is currently seeking highly motivated and energetic Aquafit and Fitness Instructors to create, design, and lead engaging, safe, and effective fitness classes for participants of varying ages and fitness levels. The instructor is responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of all participants by delivering appropriate exercise routines. This contract casual role combines exceptional customer service, strong fitness instruction skills, and knowledge of water safety and exercise principles. The successful candidate will demonstrate enthusiasm, professionalism, and the ability to motivate participants while fostering a welcoming and supportive atmosphere.

DUTIES
- Instructs classes in accordance with program standards outlined by the Orillia Parks and Recreation Division and governing bodies within the fitness industry related to the specific program.
- Performs administrative tasks necessary to support the program i.e.; collect cards and ensure that all participants sign-in.
- Work cooperatively and maintain ongoing communication with other staff, participants, members and the general public.
- Provide a high level of front-line customer service including greeting and engaging with participants.
- Complete vigilance while on duty and ready to respond to emergencies.
- Complete administrative duties in a timely manner (e.g. attendance, incident/accident reports, class set-up and take-down).
- Maintain a safe and tidy program space ensuring equipment is neatly set-up and stored appropriately.
- Ensures that all schedules for programs are followed, including beginning and ending classes on time.
- Report all concerns, accidents and incidents to immediate supervisor for follow up and take appropriate action.
- Maintain an understanding of department programs and services.
- Understand, adhere to, and enforce Corporate Policies & Procedures, Confidentiality Guidelines, Emergency Procedures and Health and Safety Standards for all participants and staff.
- Attend meetings/training as required.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum 18 years of age.
- Degree/Diploma in Physical Education/Kinesiology/Recreation preferred.
- Can-Fit-Pro FIS certification or equivalent.
- Specialized certifications for Aquatic Fitness Shallow & Deep from Water Art, CALA or equivalent.
- Current Standard First Aid / CPR C / AED from an accredited organization.
- Criminal reference with vulnerable sectors check.
- Additional certifications considered an asset.
- Experience in the following classes considered an asset: Boot Camp, Spin Classes, Strength & Stretch, Yoga, Zumba, Seniors Fitness, Aquatic Fitness
Hours of work vary based on operational needs, up to 40 hours per week and include evening and weekend shifts. Potential shifts include:
- Wednesday Morning 10:50 a.m. - 11:25 a.m. (WW Aquafit)
- Thursday Morning 7:00 a.m. - 7:45 a.m. (HIIT)
- Thursday Morning 9:00 a.m. - 9:45 a.m. (Aquafit)
- Friday Morning 9:00 a.m. - 9:45 a.m. (Aquafit)
- Friday Morning 10:00 a.m. - 10:45 a.m. (Aquafit)
Must sign off and be available for all quarterly fitness staff in-service training dates, the remaining dates for 2026 are as follows:
- June 13, 2026, 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
- September 12, 2026, 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
- December 12, 2026, 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
The successful candidate will be required to obtain an acceptable and current Vulnerable Sector Check at their own expense prior to the employment commencement date.
Compensation is as follows:
Fitness Instructor (Probation)
$26.40 - $27.20 per hour
Fitness Instructor (After Probation)
$28.69 - $29.56 per hour
Aquafit Instructor (Probation)
$28.69 - $29.56 per hour
Aquafit Instructor (After Probation)
$34.50 - $35.54 per hour
