About the role
Duties and Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Manager, Enterprise Systems, Information Technology Services (ITS) the Cloud Architect is responsible for design, implementation, and architectural oversight of cloud infrastructure and services. This role works to ensure cloud solutions are scalable, secure, cost effective, highly available, and aligned with organizational goals. The Cloud Architect collaborates with cross-functional teams to deliver robust cloud capabilities, helps to establish architectural standards, and supports ongoing modernization and digital transformation initiatives.
Responsibilities extend beyond a normal workday. The incumbent will be “on call” as required and work outside of regular business hours if necessary to complete specific work or to resolve problems.
Qualifications:
The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:
- The ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations in order to maintain current knowledge.
- The ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals will be required, as will the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, and other clients.
- The ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions is important.
- The ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
- The incumbent must have a thorough understanding of:
o Cloud concepts and IT architectures
o Different service delivery model
o Licensing and financial models of cloud services
o IT technologies and concepts including cybersecurity, networking, storage, compute and artificial intelligence
o Implementation and use of large language models, agentic artificial intelligence and machine learning
o Service delivery measurement and delivery
o Defining use cases and can relate and apply technology solutions.
Education and Experience:
The above is normally acquired through the completion of:
- Honours degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Multi Cloud Platform Certifications:
o Certifications demonstrating expertise in one or more major cloud platforms, such as Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and Google Cloud Platform (GCP) (e.g., Azure Solutions Architect Expert, AWS Certified Solutions Architect, AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, Google Professional Cloud Architect).
o Microsoft Azure Solutions Architect Expert (preferred).
- Nine years of progressively responsible experience in IT, including at least 3 years focused on cloud architecture, cloud engineering, or solution design within enterprise scale environments
- Hands-on experience with at least one major public cloud platform (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform).
- Experience providing technical leadership and oversight, including coordinating and supervising the work of technical staff, external consultants, and student or junior contributors
- Demonstrated strong grasp of networking concepts, identity, and access management in cloud environments.
- Experience implementing security controls and working within the higher education or research and innovation sectors.
