About the role
Purpose:
The Technical Writer is responsible for interpreting, translating and articulating difficult technical concepts and complex subject matter into communications and training/instructional materials that are understandable and appropriate for the intended purpose and the intended audience, e.g., technical and/or non-technical. This role is required to have the capacity and ability to learn and comprehend a broad range of business processes and technical materials (products, solutions, processes) as well as a clear understanding of what helps and what interferes with communication. Using established guidelines and/or facilitating the creation of new guidelines, the role will develop, disseminate and maintain documentation standards across all communications mediums.The role will be situated within the Office of the University Registrar (OUR), Division of Students and will promote the values and strategic vision of the division.
Education:
Relevant University degree (e.g., Communications, English and/or Professional Writing) or a science degree (e.g., Computer Science, Engineering) with Technical Writing/Professional Communications training, or an equivalent of four years' recent experience (defined as within the last five years) working at York University and performing the same or similar tasks. This education equivalency is in addition to the experiential requirements outlined in below.
Experience:
-
Three years of experience in a technical writing and/or information development role.

Experience taking complex subject matter and translating them into clear, concise end-user friendly materials e.g., user guides. manuals, policy and procedure guides, online help, training materials

Experience developing technical documentation for functional and technical enterprise software users, system administrators, and other technical audiences
-
Experience developing rich media documentation such as instructional videos, interactive simulations.

Experience working in Waterfall, iterative and Agile project methodologies.
Skills:
-
Advanced skills with documentation authoring and maintenance tools.

Advanced skills with Microsoft Office 365, Microsoft Visio.

Aptitude for in-depth research and pairing information back to compelling core messages.

Effective communication skills in order to effectively interact with both technical and non-technical users.

Effective presentation skills with demonstrated ability to conduct review meetings.

Knowledge of customer relation management (CRM) systems.

Ability to work independently and perform effectively as part of a team.

Ability to deal calmly and effectively with people.

Ability to maintain confidentiality.
-
Ability to multi-task and meet long/short term deadlines, set priorities and work effectively under pressure.

Ability and willingness to learn new systems, technologies, documentation methods and tools.
Additional Notes:
Please note: This position requires the candidate to produce a verification of degree(s), credentials(s), or equivalencies from accredited institutions and/or international equivalents at the time of interview. Hours of work: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.Summer: sameRequests to work overtime may occur periodically throughout the yearVacation restriction: Dependent on critical milestones for each project.
