About the role
Our Licensed Nuclear Facilities Department is looking for a Zero Energy Deuterium 2 (ZED-2) Technologist! Can you see yourself in a role ensuring the safe and compliant operation of our ZED-2 Reactor, working as a team member to not only contribute to experimental work but also supervise maintenance personnel and assist with operations documentation? What will you be doing!
- Performing and assisting with the design, installation, and testing of experimental equipment.
- Safely operating the ZED-2 Reactor.
- Ensuring that the equipment within the facility operates safely and efficiently in accordance with regulations and procedures.
- Performing operational activities in accordance with procedures, work plans, and manuals.
- Modelling expected operational behaviours.
- Assisting in developing work plans and procedures.
- Supervising Maintenance personnel.
- Solving technical problems involved with equipment and procedures.
- Performing independent inspections and tests.
- Recording observations and data.
- Performing a variety of duties and tasks without loss of efficiency or composure.
- Working as an effective team member and responding to challenging schedule demands.
- Participating in facility compliance activities, such as CNSC or IAEA inspections, or other internal requirements; and
- Other duties as assigned by your manager.
What we are looking for:
-Education
- Graduation from a recognized institute of advanced technology, or equivalent formal education, in a field relevant to the position, Such as Mechanical Engineering Technology, Materials Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Welding Engineering Technology and normally has two to three (2-3) years of pertinent technological experience.OR
- Secondary School Diploma or equivalent and has five to eight (5-8) years of pertinent and progressive experience or the equivalent in experience, additional education and/or training. -Experience
- Experience in a licensed nuclear facility is an asset.
- Experience with fuel handling is an asset.
- Hands-on experience performing experiments is desirable.
- Experience with mechanical and electrical experiment equipment setup is an asset.
- Experience in instrumentation for experiments and/or measurement systems would be an asset.
- Experience in a nuclear facility would be an asset. -Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge of Quality Assurance and Conduct of Operations Procedures would be an asset.
- Ability to demonstrate strong mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to demonstrate expected operational behaviours.
- Strong computer skills (including Word and Excel).
- Working knowledge of CAD is desirable.
- Demonstrating ability in technical problem-solving.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to work independently and in teams.
- Ability to perform under stress when confronted with emergency, unusual or hazardous conditions.
- Consistently works to high standards and demands the same from others.
- Demonstrating team leadership skills, including the ability to develop a collaborative team oriented to work in accordance with prescribed procedures.
- An aptitude in learning new skills, multitasking, meeting deadlines, and achieving objectives and goals.
- Basic knowledge of experimental reactor physics methods, including neutron transport theory, neutron diffusion theory and computer codes would be an asset. -Security Clearance Eligibility Required
- Level 2 Secret which has a minimum requirement of7 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, United States and/or the United Kingdom. CNL implements security screening in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's “Standard on Security Screening” and the “Policy on Government Security.”
Working Conditions:
- Working schedule: Five (5) days per week, seven and a half (7.5) hours per day for a thirty-seven and a half (37.5) hour work week.
- This position is part of the USW 1568 unionand is governed by the terms and conditions outlined in their Collective Agreement. As a member of this bargaining unit, you’ll benefit from clear expectations around hours of work, wages, vacation, and other conditions that support a fair and consistent working environment.
- Work in moderate-radiation-hazard environments where personal protective equipment is required.
- This work will require standing and concentrating on the task at hand for extended periods.
- Expected to work with hands in an operations setting.
- Work location will be in CNL’s controlled area (radiation training provided; must be able to use a respirator; frequent monitoring is necessary; security checkpoints are part of the daily routine; daily commute by foot from the parking lot to the work area is required).
- The environment demands high vigilance to alarms, lights and signals as a safety requirement.
- Ability to respond calmly and responsibly to emergency situations.
