About the role
The Opportunity The Ottawa Senators are looking for an energetic, creative, and enthusiastic individual to join the Game Presentation team in the role of Mascot Assistant & Back-Up Performer.
This part-time, event-based role supports Spartacat at Ottawa Senators home games, community appearances, corporate events, and promotional activities. Hours will vary and will be scheduled according to the Ottawa Senators game, event, and community appearance calendar, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
The successful candidate will act as Spartacat’s primary assistant, helping ensure safe, organized, and memorable fan interactions, while also serving as a back-up mascot performer on an as-needed basis when coverage is required.
Key Responsibilities Mascot Assistant Serve as Spartacat’s handler during Ottawa Senators home games. Ensure all mascot-related in-game activations are executed successfully. Assist with the set-up, execution, and tear-down of mascot props, skits, and game-day activities. Maintain a safe environment for Spartacat, fans, staff, and event participants. Act as the primary handler for Spartacat at select community appearances, corporate events, and promotional activities throughout the season, as required. Assist in capturing social media content featuring Spartacat. Contribute creative ideas for mascot content, skits, and fan engagement initiatives. Work collaboratively with the Game Presentation team to enhance the overall fan experience at Canadian Tire Centre and at community events. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Back-Up Performer Perform as a mascot on an as-needed basis when coverage is required. Learn and embody the character traits, personality, and mannerisms while maintaining character integrity and consistency. Participate in rehearsals, training sessions, and performance preparation as required.
Qualifications (what we look for) Previous experience as a mascot handler or mascot performer is considered a strong asset. Experience in performing arts, including dance, cheer, theatre, gymnastics, or a related discipline, is preferred. Energetic, reliable, creative, and comfortable engaging with fans of all ages. Strong verbal and non-verbal communication skills. Able to receive and implement direction in a live event environment. Understands the importance of safety, professionalism, and maintaining mascot character integrity. Comfortable performing in a full-body mascot costume for extended periods, with limited visibility. Able to stand, walk, and remain active for extended periods during games, events, and community appearances. Able to assist with the set-up, care, organization, and storage of mascot props and costume elements. Available to work evenings, weekends, and holidays based on the game, event, and community appearance calendar. A valid driver’s license and/or reliable transportation is considered an asset. Familiarity with hockey and the Ottawa Senators brand is considered an asset. Bilingualism in English and French is considered an asset.
