Position Highlights BC Hydro is looking for an experienced Electrical Site Engineer to support major construction projects and ensure electrical
systems are constructed and commissioned safely, correctly, and to the highest engineering standards.
If you are a self-starter who thrives in the field, enjoys working on large and complex construction projects, and takes pride
in seeing designs successfully brought to life, we invite you to join our Site Engineering team.
You will be part of the North Coast Transmission Projects, a once-in-a-generation infrastructure initiative that will deliver
clean, reliable power to northern British Columbia. These projects support economic growth, decarbonization, and
development across mining, LNG, manufacturing, and technology sectors. Delivered in partnership with First Nations and
the Province of B.C., they represent critical infrastructure for Canada’s future.
In this role, success means safe execution, well-coordinated construction and commissioning activities, strong relationships
with contractors and designers, and electrical systems brought online smoothly and reliably.
Joining this team means contributing directly to projects that strengthen communities, enable industry, and shape B.C.’s
energy future.
What you'll do
At the heart of construction and commissioning, you apply your technical expertise to solve complex field issues and keep
work progressing safely and efficiently.
- Lead and oversee field engineering activities for construction and commissioning of electrical and protection & control
(P&C) systems, including:
o Switchgear
o Reactive equipment
o Protection systems
o Generator/turbine control and monitoring
o Communications networks
o Water conveyance, spillway controls, and instrumentation systems
- Provide construction oversight on major projects, working closely with contractors to ensure effective coordination,
staging, and execution of work.
- Review constructability and contribute to the development of construction and commissioning plans, schedules,
procedures, and methods to ensure conformance with design intent and safety requirements.
- Perform first-level quality assurance to confirm work complies with drawings, specifications, contract requirements, and
industry standards.
- Ensure testing and inspections are performed, witnessed, and documented in accordance with approved procedures. Act
as the Engineer of Record’s delegate for field reviews, witness points, and hold points, documenting results in field review
records.
- Resolve field non-compliances and technical issues by bringing together design engineers, construction teams, and
contractors to achieve timely, practical, and technically sound solutions.
- Collaborate with Construction Management to identify and eliminate environmental, safety, and health hazards associated
with construction and commissioning activities.
- Organize and maintain discipline-specific technical records, including red-lined drawings, RFIs, and non-conformance
reports, and synthesize this information into construction and completion documentation.
- Lead the transition from construction to commissioning by
developing commissioning plans that systematically bring electrical systems online and verify performance and functionality.
- Mentor and coach engineers and technical staff by sharing knowledge, providing technical guidance, and supporting
professional development.
What you bring
You bring strong technical fundamentals, practical field experience, and the ability to apply sound engineering judgement in
complex construction environments.
- A bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from a Canadian university with approximately eight years of progressive
engineering experience related to electrical construction, testing, and commissioning, preferably within a utility, generation,
or high voltage environment.
-
Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in British Columbia, or eligibility for immediate registration.
-
Strong technical writing and presentation skills, with the ability to clearly communicate complex engineering concepts to a
wide range of stakeholders.
-
Well developed organizational and interpersonal skills, enabling you to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
-
A demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development through self study, formal training, and participation in
technical or professional organizations.
-
A collaborative, approachable mindset with a strong sense of ownership, initiative, and proven problem solving capability.
-
The ability to independently analyze and resolve challenging and non routine engineering problems while understanding
the impacts on cost, constructability, operability, safety, and schedule.
