About the role

Grade**:**SGEU.07.
The Provincial Capital Commission is looking for an energetic, innovative, and well-organized individual to report to the Ecologist and assist with protecting Wascana Centre's natural environment while still encouraging people to enjoy the protected marsh habitat. As the Ecology Technician, you will assist with research and planning for capital/major environmental projects, and work alongside the Ecologist with habitat/shoreline assessments, species surveys, and invasive/noxious/nuisance species monitoring and management. In this role, the Ecology Technician will also develop and conduct interpretive environmental programming for schools, groups, day camps, and the public.
Duties will include:
- Providing interpretive tours/programs to the public, particularly school groups.
- Developing and leading educational programs for public.
- Assisting with Canada Goose management, banding, carp monitoring/management, and predator control.
- Conduct shoreline/habitat assessments and species surveys under the natural assets inventory.
- Monitor and assist with management plans for invasive/noxious/nuisance species.
- Research for major environmental projects.
- Responding to inquiries regarding wildlife and reports of injured/deceased wildlife.
- Operating boats (kayak and rowboat) and 1 ton or less truck.
- Monitoring water levels in the Waterfowl Display Ponds Area
You will need:
- Knowledge of natural species- ability to identify and speak about local flora and fauna.
- Knowledge of or experience in conducting shoreline and/or habitat assessments.
- Experience with invasive species monitoring and management.
- Knowledge of or experience with pest/nuisance species management (ex. Canada Geese)
- Experience with data collection and analysis.
- Knowledge and experience using Saskatchewan environmental regulations.
- Ability to handle wildlife (Canada Geese, fish, etc.)
- Ability to deal courteously with staff and members of the public.
- Ability to perform outdoor manual labour and work in all weather conditions.
- Ability to operate required equipment (trucks and boats) competently and safely.
- Availability of working some evenings, early mornings and weekend hours is required.
Qualified applicants will have a degree/diploma in Biology, Environment Science or similar, and a minimum four (4) years related experience. Candidates must possess a valid class 5 driver's license. Experience with bird banding, species surveys, interpretive programming, and working with groups of children would be an asset. A satisfactory vulnerable sector criminal record check is required.
