About the Department
Redlen’s Module Development Department is responsible for the design and development of complex radiation detector modules, ensuring performance, cost, reliability, and manufacturability through to New Product Introduction (NPI). These detector modules are full systems incorporating custom ASICs/ASSPs, embedded controllers, FPGA based logic, and high-voltage sensor interfaces.
The Role
As a Hardware Engineer in the Module Development Department, you will contribute to the design, implementation, and validation of analog and digital electronics used in Redlen’s application specific radiation detectors. You will work on technically challenging products that combine novel semiconductor technology with demanding system level requirements, while collaborating closely with cross functional engineering and manufacturing teams.
This role is well suited to an experienced hardware engineer who is comfortable owning defined technical scope, applying strong fundamentals, and contributing to continuous product improvement within a structured development environment.
Key Responsibilities
Hardware Design & Analysis
- Design, implement, and validate low level analog and high speed digital electronic circuits for radiation detector modules, based on defined system requirements
- Perform SPICE simulations and signal integrity analysis to support design decisions and identify improvement opportunities
- Contribute to the design of power supply, high-voltage, and isolation circuits supporting detector sensors
Integration, Debug, and Validation
- Support board and module level integration of electronic components including FPGAs, microcontrollers, memory devices, and semicustom ASICs
- Investigate, debug, and resolve circuit and board level failures during development, validation, and early production
- Assist with emissions and EMI troubleshooting, including identifying sources and supporting mitigation efforts
Product Improvement & NPI Support
- Contribute to initiatives focused on cost reduction, yield improvement, reliability enhancement, and added customer value
- Support NPI activities by working closely with manufacturing, test, and systems engineering teams
- Identify and raise design risks, technical issues, and improvement opportunities within assigned scope
Documentation & Collaboration
- Create and maintain clear technical documentation, leveraging PLM systems and Redlen documentation standards
- Collaborate effectively within a cross functional team environment, adapting to evolving project needs
- Support and mentor junior engineers through knowledge sharing and design collaboration, as appropriate to role level
Other
- Other duties as assigned and relevant to the role.
Qualifications
Experience Required
- 5 years of experience designing and delivering complex electronic circuits in an industrial or product development environment
- Strong fundamentals and hands-on experience in analog circuit design and SPICE based simulation
- Experience with schematic capture and PCB layout in a professional environment using tools such as Altium and/or Cadence Allegro; multilayer board design experience
- Experience designing power supply circuits, including high-voltage and isolation designs
- Experience troubleshooting failing circuits and boards
- Working knowledge of high speed digital design and signal integrity principles
Skills & Experience of Interest
- Experience applying first principles physics to semiconductor behavior, ASIC development, or complex electronic systems
- Mixed signal design experience (ADC/DAC, DSP interfaces)
- Exposure to high-voltage Xray or radiation detector circuits
- Experience with EMI/emissions testing and debug using tools such as spectrum analyzers and near field probes
- Understanding of PCB thermal management and post layout analysis; HDI experience is an asset
- Coding or scripting experience (e.g., Python, C/C++, HDL) is an asset
- FPGA coding experience: Verilog, VHDL and/or hard/soft MCU configuration and programming
Additional Requirements
- Good time management skills and ability to work with moderate supervision
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a dynamic, cross functional team environment
- Willingness to support and mentor junior engineers
- Comfort working on technically challenging development projects with evolving requirements
- Clear and effective oral and written communication skills in English
- Demonstrated self motivation and positive, collaborative attitude
Education
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering, Engineering Physics, or equivalent
