Job Summary
The Maintenance Planner is responsible for planning, scheduling, and coordinating maintenance activities to ensure safe, reliable, and cost-effective operation of facilities and equipment. This role works closely with maintenance supervisors, trades staff, and operations staff to develop job plans, manage work backlogs, and support preventative and corrective maintenance programs. The Maintenance Planner plays a key role in improving asset reliability, maintenance efficiency, and overall facility performance.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Plan, schedule, and coordinate preventive and corrective maintenance activities using work orders in coordination with the operations and maintenance teams.
- Create, update, and manage maintenance plans and task lists within the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
- Review incoming maintenance notification requests and convert requests into work orders in accordance with department standards.
- Maintain and manage maintenance backlogs, prioritizing and scheduling work based on safety, risk, and operational impact.
- Lead and participate in routine scheduling meetings to discuss weekly schedules and work prioritization.
- Coordinate and procure parts and materials following City of Saskatoon Procurement Policies and Procedures.
- Support shutdowns and facility outages by assisting with planning and scheduling activities
- Review work order history and asset data to support maintenance optimization and continuous improvement
- Ensure maintenance plans comply with safety, regulatory, and organizational standards
- Assists with the development of maintenance programs, policies, procedures and applicable work instruction guides, and standard operating procedures.
- Assist with inventory tracking and material availability planning.
- Lead and/or participate in continuous improvement projects related to maintenance planning, workflow optimization, or asset management processes.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education, Training and Experience Requirements

Grade 12 education.
-
Possession of one of the following:
- Two (2) years post-secondary technology related program,
- Interprovincial Journeyperson trade certification in Carpentry, Electrical, Plumbing, or Painting
- Two (2) year post-secondary diploma for Power Engineering or other relevant educational experience

Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in commercial or industrial facility maintenance and/or operation; plus two (2) years of demonstrated experience in facility maintenance management applying skills in maintenance planning and scheduling.

Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

Possession of a Maintenance Management Professional Certificate (MMP), Asset Management Professional (AMP) Certificate, or Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professional (CMRP) designation or ability to obtain a Maintenance Management Professional Certificate Modules 1, 5, 6 & 7.

Possession of a valid Saskatchewan Class 5 Driver's Licence.

Current driver’s abstract from SGI demonstrating a safe driving record.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills
- Proficiency with CMMS software and maintenance planning tools, preferably SAP.
- Proficiency in the use of a computer using the Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong understanding of proactive maintenance strategies and asset management best practices.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, manuals, and specifications.
- Knowledge and understanding of building mechanical, electrical, architectural, structural, and other systems commonly found in a commercial facility.
- Knowledge of safety regulations, maintenance best practices, and reliability principles.
- Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Physical ability to perform the assigned duties.
**Weekly Hours:**36.67
Salary Range:$80,673.60 to $88,943.04 CADper annum(2026 rates)
