Accelerator Physicist (Beam Dynamics) The Canadian Light source Inc. (CLSI) is looking for an experienced Physicist with expertise in Beam Dynamics to join our Accelerator Physics (AP) group. Within the Accelerator Operations and Development department, the AP team provides scientific and technical leadership needed to operate and optimize the accelerators’ performance.
Who We Are The Canadian Light Source (CLS) is a 3rd generation synchrotron light source and a national research facility located on the University of Saskatchewan. CLS produces very bright light that is used to explore the laws of nature from the microscopic to the macroscopic dimensions and helps bolster innovation in many technical fields. Through its 22 beamlines, it serves national and international users working on everything from dinosaur skins to mine remediation and from cancer treatment to cutting edge electronics.
Our facility is centrally located on the beautiful grounds of the University of Saskatchewan within walking distance of Saskatoon’s riverbank trails and close to campus amenities such as fitness facilities, restaurants, museums, and galleries. Saskatoon is a livable and growing city with plenty of green space and walking paths, a thriving arts community, and a lively music scene. The city, as well as the provincial and regional parks within a driving distance, offer year-round options for outdoors activities and exploration.
What Your Responsibilities Will Include As a recognized and experienced Accelerator Physicist, your main goal is to ensure the effective operation of the accelerator complex:
- You will provide support to the operations team to find, analyse, and resolve machine and beam quality issues.
- You will work together with members of the Accelerator Physics group as well as other colleagues in the facility to propose technical upgrades of components or subsystems.
- You will provide remediation plans to address identified risk with specific systems to ensure high availability of beam for the user program.
- You will develop technical ownership for one of our accelerator systems and become the “go to” expert for your colleagues.
You are encouraged to develop new approaches in the field of accelerator physics through collaboration with other accelerator groups, guest researchers, students and other stakeholders in Canada and internationally.
Some considerations for planning your work Some travel, within Canada and international, is expected to interact with vendors, suppliers and collaborators as well as to showcase your work as a member of CLSI to the international community.
Shift work (e.g. evenings, weekends) is expected during machine developments studies to minimally impact operations. On occasion, designated qualified operators in the AP team may be requested to cover unexpected absences from the Operations team. These opportunities will also help you support further understanding of how our staff work with and support our systems day to day.
What You Would Bring This role is right for you if you enjoy collaborating with other professionals and experts and have an interest in solving unique problems.
Qualifications
- Ph.D. in accelerator physics or closely related field.
- A minimum of 5 years of directly related experience (post Ph.D.) in areas such as developing new operational schemes for a particle beam accelerator, preferentially for High energy LINAC or Transfer Lines.
- Proven record of theoretical and conceptual knowledge in Beam dynamics and/or Lattice design.
Any of the following qualification will be considered an asset Experience supervising/mentoring students or younger researchers.
Compensation: Salary will be based on the experience and background of the successful candidate.
