THE OPPORTUNITY
This position is responsible for providing technical support for the city's geo-spatial infrastructure data gathering process as a part fulfillment of the GIS data management strategy. The incumbent will be involved with field data gathering using various field equipment and the information collected will be used to populate the city GIS system. This position reports to the GIS Supervisor.
This is a full-time, temporary position for up to 12 weeks. The hourly wage for this position is: $19.11
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Technical Support
-
Perform Asset data collection using survey and mapping grade equipment.
-
Perform existing spatial data conversion and integration in to new GIS ready format datasets.
-
Capture data from various sources (Aerial imagery, As-Built drawings, and scanned documents) to produce infrastructure assets incorporated in to the corporate GIS system.
-
Perform updates to existing spatial information.
-
Assist GIS staff with maintenance and development of spatial data and metadata related to sewers, water, storm, and roads & drainage using survey and mapping grade equipment.

Research data collection techniques required to complete field work in an efficient manner.
- Quality Control and Assurance
-
Maintain spatial data quality control and assurance by using CAD/GIS software packages and tools to update, edit and perform QA/QC spatial/attribute information.
- Stakeholder Relations
-
Work with public works field staff and GIS staff to ensure spatial accuracy and quality of data.

Create working maps for field staff.
-
Assist GIS staff as required.
- Other Duties
- Understand and adhere to City policies, procedures and standards, whether written or implied, as amended from time to time.
- Contribute to a positive safety culture by always acting in a safe manner and complying with City safety policies and procedures for staff and contractors.
- Act as a steward of the City's Corporate Culture by following the “Values, We Live By”.
- All employees shall act in a safe manner at all times and will report any unsafe conditions, procedures or acts for the benefit of the City. Continual adherence to the City Safety Policy is mandatory.
- Employees are expected to stay current on WHMIS and other safety-related procedures.
- Perform other job-related duties.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Qualifications:
-
One (1) or two (2) year post-secondary certificate or diploma in Geographic Information Systems, Remote Sensing, Geomatics or equivalent.
-
Six (6) months minimum related experience.
-
GIS Professional Certification an asset.
-
Valid Alberta Driver's license.
-
Demonstrate clear understanding of GIS/Geomatics principles.
-
Real-time spatial data collection techniques, experience in mapping grade data collectors.
-
Understanding of coordinate systems and basic mapping concepts.
-
Knowledge and experience with personal computers and related hardware such as storage, archiving, data output, printing, file transfer and maintenance.
-
Working knowledge of AutoCAD software and SQL query language.
-
Demonstrated problem solving skills.
-
Ability to work independently, with a limited degree of supervision.
-
Ability to work outdoors.
-
Excellent organizational skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize work within specific time lines.
-
Participates in and contributes to a productive and collaborative team environment.
-
High level of attention to detail is required.

Basic knowledge of ESRI ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Server, RDBMS, AutoCAD, GPS Technology

Basic knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, and PowerPoint
Asset Qualifications:

GIS Professional Certification an asset.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Class 5 Driver’s License.

Must obtain a satisfactory review of a three-year Driver’s Abstract, with a maximum of six demerits.

Criminal Record Check Clearance.
Working Environment:
- Monday to Friday.
- Hours of Work: 8:30am to 4:30pm.
- Overtime may be required.
- Travel may be required.
- Exposure to noise levels that may exceed 85 decibels.
