The Gathering Place is a community health centre located in downtown St. John’s that provides a range of programs and services to individuals experiencing poverty, homelessness, food insecurity and other barriers. Each day, staff and volunteers work together to provide meals, health services, housing supports, and social programs in a safe and welcoming environment.

We are seeking an experienced Human Resources Manager to lead and strengthen the organization’s people and workplace practices. This role serves as a key partner to leadership and a trusted resource across the organization, providing strategic and operational direction on a wide range of human resources matters.
The Human Resources Manager is responsible for the oversight and accountability of core HR functions, including labour relations, talent acquisition, employee experience, wellness and policy development. The role requires a balance of strategic leadership and hands on execution, with accountability for ensuring HR practices are fair, consistent and aligned with legislative and organizational requirements. Working closely with leadership, the Human Resources Manager plays a critical role in shaping a respectful supportive, and effective workplace environment while building capacity within the HR function.
Key Responsibilities

Provide leadership and direction for the HR function, serving as the primary advisor to managers and staff while overseeing the delivery of HR services across the organization.

Lead and support labour relations activities, including collective agreement interpretation, grievance management, investigations and engagement with union representatives.

Oversee attendance management, disability management, workplace accommodations and WorkplaceNL matters, ensuring appropriate processes, documentation and return to work planning are in place.

Lead the development, implementation and ongoing review of HR policies, procedures and workplace standards to ensure compliance and alignment with organizational needs.

Support the development and implementation of workplace health and safety policies and initiatives, ensuring compliance with legislation and fostering a safe, respectful environment for staff, Guests and visitors.

Partner with leadership on workforce planning, organizational design and staffing strategies, while overseeing recruitment and selection processes.

Support the employee lifecycle processes including onboarding, offboarding, benefits administration and workforce transitions.

Provide direction and guidance on staff scheduling practices, ensuring alignment with operational requirements and collective agreement provisions.

Oversee HR related inputs to payroll in collaboration with Accounting personnel, ensuring accuracy of employee data, leave tracking and pay related processes.

Act as the organizational lead for the HRIS, ensuring system integrity, data accuracy and meaningful reporting to support decision making.

Support and mentor HR staff and contribute to building internal HR capacity and consistency in practice.
What You Bring

A Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a focus in Human Resources, Employment Relations or a related field. Equivalent education and experience will also be considered.

Five (5)+ years of progressive experience in human resources leadership, including experience in unionized environments.

Demonstrated experience in labour relations, including collective agreement interpretation, investigations and grievance handling.

Experience overseeing attendance management, disability management and workplace accommodations.

Strong understanding of payroll processes and HR information systems.

Experience supporting workplace health and safety programs, including policy implementation and compliance with applicable legislation, is considered an asset.

Proven ability to lead, advise and influence in complex and sensitive situations.

Strong judgment, problem solving ability and a practical approach to balancing operational needs with fair and consistent people practices.

Experience developing and implementing policies, procedures and workplace standards.

Excellent communication and relationship building skills, with the ability to support and guide leaders effectively.

Training in harassment investigations or alternative dispute resolution is considered an asset.
This role plays a central leadership function in supporting the people and culture of The Gathering Place. The Human Resources Manager ensures that strong, consistent and thoughtful HR practices are embedded across the organization, supporting both employee well being and operational effectiveness.
