##Scope
The Park Development Services team plays a vital role in shaping Surrey¿s built environment, so it supports healthy ecosystems while meeting the needs of a growing community. We are looking for a Park Technician to join our collaborative and mission¿driven team. This is an exciting opportunity for a customer¿focused professional who is passionate about protecting and enhancing urban forests, sensitive ecosystems, and parkland assets. In this role, you will be a key point of contact on land development projects, helping ensure Parks¿ requirements are met, while also contributing to the creation of new parks and park amenities that benefit residents for generations to come.
##Responsibilities
Reporting to the Park Development Services Manager, you will play an important role in the planning, development, protection, and ongoing stewardship of Surrey's extensive park system. Your work will balance technical expertise, on site coordination, and relationship building with a wide range of internal and external partners.
In this role, you will:
- Liaise with urban planners, engineering staff, contractors, and developers to represent park interests and requirements on land development projects
- Review and provide technical comments on development plans and drawings, including civil drawings, arborist reports, environmental reports, and landscape drawings
- Attend site meetings and carry out inspections to ensure park requirements are implemented as approved
- Support the planning, design, procurement, and delivery of a variety of park development projects
- Prepare and implement restoration or treatment plans for parkland upgrades
- Develop cost estimates and prepare technical reports
- Coordinate and supervise contractors and crews working on parkland upgrades
- Perform Tree Risk Assessments
- Manage programs and projects within approved budgets
##Qualifications
We are seeking a candidate with demonstrated knowledge of park operations, landscape design and construction, and/or riparian restoration, along with experience supervising staff or contractors. Strong project coordination skills and the ability to read and interpret construction drawings are considered significant assets.
The ideal candidate is an analytical problem solver with excellent communication skills, capable of building positive working relationships with both internal and external stakeholders. Diplomacy, tact, and professionalism are essential when addressing issues and balancing diverse interests.
Applicants will have ISA Arborist Certification or be eligible to apply for certification.
Candidates must also meet one of the following qualification pathways:
- Completion of a Diploma program from a recognized post secondary institution with a focus on Horticulture, Arboriculture, Forestry, Natural Resource Management, or Civil Engineering, plus a minimum of three years of related experience; or
- Completion of Grade 12 supplemented by a Horticultural Trades Qualification, plus three years of related progressive experience; or
- Completion of Grade 12 and a one year full time Horticultural Technical Certificate Program from a recognized post secondary institution with a focus on Horticulture, Arboriculture, Forestry, Natural Resource Management, or Civil Engineering, along with additional related academic courses and training, including at least one credit course in supervision and one in technical writing, supplemented by four years of related progressive experience.
An acceptable equivalent combination of training and experience will be considered.
