POSITION SUMMARY
The High Voltage Service Technician supports the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of medium- and high-voltage electrical power systems by performing inspection, testing, maintenance, commissioning, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical equipment in substations, industrial facilities, utility environments, and renewable energy facilities. Reporting to the Regional Manager, this role works closely with experienced technicians and project teams to deliver high-quality field services while maintaining Cormorant's commitment to safety, quality, and customer satisfaction. The High Voltage Service Technician plays an important role in supporting preventative maintenance programs, commissioning new electrical infrastructure, responding to equipment issues, and ensuring electrical systems operate safely and reliably for our clients throughout Northwestern Ontario.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform inspection, testing, maintenance, troubleshooting, and commissioning of medium and high-voltage electrical equipment Conduct preventative and corrective maintenance on switchgear, circuit breakers, transformers, instrument transformers, buswork, protective relays, and associated station equipment Perform electrical testing including insulation resistance, contact resistance, transformer testing, primary and secondary injection, and protective relay testing Assist with commissioning new substations and electrical installations, as well as modifications and system upgrades Diagnose electrical equipment failures and support troubleshooting activities to identify corrective actions Interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, protection and control drawings, and single-line diagrams Install, test, calibrate, and verify protective relays and associated control systems Support construction, retrofit, modification, and maintenance activities for substations and electrical infrastructure Prepare and maintain accurate testing records, commissioning documentation, maintenance reports, and technical field reports Maintain testing equipment, specialized tools, and company assets in safe working condition Collaborate with Project Managers, Engineers, Senior Technicians, and client representatives to ensure successful project execution Follow all company Health, Safety, Environmental, and Quality Management System requirements Participate in hazard assessments, job safety briefings, lockout/tagout procedures, and safe work planning Identify and report hazards, near misses, equipment deficiencies, and opportunities for continuous improvement Maintain required technical certifications, safety training, and industry competencies Provide professional service while building positive relationships with clients and site personnel Support emergency response work, planned outages, and scheduled maintenance activities as required Travel to client sites throughout Northwestern Ontario and other locations as required Contribute to the continued success of Cormorant through technical excellence, safety, professionalism, and exceptional customer service Other duties and responsibilities as assigned CANDIDATE PROFILE: Completion of an Electrical Engineering Technology program, Electrical Apprenticeship, Journeyperson Electrician certification, or an equivalent electrical trade qualification Minimum 2 years of experience working with medium and high-voltage electrical systems Experience performing testing, maintenance, commissioning, or repair of substation and industrial electrical equipment is preferred Working knowledge of switchgear, circuit breakers, power transformers, instrument transformers, protective relays, and associated electrical apparatus Ability to interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, protection and control drawings, and single-line diagrams Experience using electrical testing equipment including insulation resistance testers, relay test sets, transformer test equipment, and other diagnostic tools Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively in a team environment Strong commitment to safety and compliance with industry standards and safe work practices Proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience with digital field reporting software is considered an asset Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced field environment Valid Class G Driver's License with the ability to travel throughout Northwestern Ontario and work at client sites as required Interested candidates can forward their resume and cover letter via careers@cormorantutility.com.
