The Opportunity
Parkland School Division is currently hiring for a Casual Farm Manager. This position is initially for the summer break, with the possibility of extending throughout the school year as the farm grows.
Key Responsibilities
- Animal Care and Daily Maintenance:
- Move the turkey tractor to fresh pasture daily to ensure sustainable grazing.
- Collect eggs from the chicken coop
- Feed and water all animals, 20 chickens and 10 turkeys
- Monitor and clean waterers
- Sanitation:
- Collect and dispose of animal waste in the coop
- Refresh animal bedding regularly.
- Specialized Care (optional, only with appropriate skills, experience and knowledge): conduct hive inspections of two beehives once every two weeks
- Gardening & Land Management:
- Perform daily watering of the pumpkin patch and three raised garden beds.
- Conduct light weeding and general maintenance of garden areas.
If extended into school term:
- Livestock Monitoring:
- Check sheep for health
- Ensure fence integrity.
- Mentorship: Oversee and support student volunteers working on the school farm, fostering a positive learning environment
Working Hours:
- During the summer: Flexible 2 hours per day, Monday to Friday
- If extended into school term: 11 am to 1 pm, Monday to Friday
- Occasional weekend hours maybe required, contingent upon animal care needs.
Education & Experience
- Experience in small-scale farming, livestock care, or gardening is considered an asset.
- Ability to perform physical tasks associated with farm work (lifting, moving equipment,etc.).
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work independently.
- Experience working with youth or volunteers is considered an asset.
- Knowledge of beekeeping/hive management is considered an asset.
Rate of pay: $21.85/hour
