Position Summary The Nurse Practitioner (NP-MRP) is a vital member of Quinte Health, providing advanced, patient-centered care within the Surgery Unit. As a registered nurse in the extended class (EC), the NP-MRP autonomously diagnoses, orders, and interprets tests, prescribes treatments, and performs procedures within their legislated scope.

In collaboration with surgeons, medical learners, and the interprofessional team, the NP-MRP ensures seamless patient transitions across the healthcare continuum. This role involves comprehensive assessments, leadership in managing the chronic health conditions in complex surgical patients and coordinating with community partners to optimize discharge processes and post-acute care needs.

Required

• Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse in the Extended Class (Primary Health Care or Adult) and entitled to practice.
• Completion of an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program (or equivalent) is required.
• Minimum 3 years’ direct clinical nursing experience in an acute care surgical setting.
• Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), or proof of enrolment in a recertification course, required, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification is an asset.
• Previous experience as a Clinical Nurse Specialist or Nurse Practitioner working in acute care is preferred.
• Comprehensive knowledge base and experience in orthopedic and/or general surgery is preferred.
• CNA certification in Medical-Surgical Nursing is an asset.
• Certification in Hospital and Acute Care for Nurse Practitioners (or equivalent) is an asset.
• Membership in relevant professional organizations (e.g., NPAO, RNAO) is an asset.

Duties On a Practical Level, You Will

• Utilize a strong clinical knowledge base to care for patients and families through the collection of health and diagnostic data, advanced physical assessment, formulation of diagnoses, and development of treatment plans in collaboration with the most responsible surgeon.
• Perform comprehensive nursing/medical history, physical and psychosocial assessment of the patient’s status, and develop and implement care plans to address identified needs across the Surgical Program.
• Provide direct, specialized care and/or consultation to patients, families, health care professionals, and community partners in situations where advanced nursing expertise is required (e.g., complex patient situations with unpredictable outcomes).
• Work with the interdisciplinary team to set care goals and advance care planning.
• Initiate and execute diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for the identification and management of medical conditions, as authorized through medical directives when necessary.
• Follow established IM/FM/NP consultation escalation processes to meet the changing needs of patients when required.
• Support the establishment and attainment of clinical objectives, ensuring alignment with the strategic direction of the Program and the organization.
• Lead and influence clinical practice and patient outcomes by collaborating with the healthcare team and community partners to address complex patient care situations.
• Play a key role in quality improvement activities and policy/procedure development, relevant to Acute Care Surgical Care.
• Provide ongoing support for the professional development and educational needs of staff, fostering a culture of continuous learning and growth.
• Integrates research into practice to ensure best practice standards are maintained.
• Initiates and participates in professional and organizational activities to improve and advance nursing practice in the area of surgical care.
• Creates, utilizes, and/or disseminates new nursing knowledge.
