Main Purpose & Function The Truck Driver I operates service, special dump, panel or flat bodied trucks of light or medium weight used inhauling materials, equipment and supplies, watering trees in parks and streets as well as transporting workers to and from various job sites. The incumbent will be required to work shifts at varying start and end times between Monday and Friday.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities The Truck Driver I is responsible for the operation of vehicles used in the transporting of materials, workers, equipment and water to a variety of locations to support Urban Forestry for tree watering tasks. The type, power and size of the trucks may vary, but in general will range from one half to three cubic yard capacity and will include dump, panel, service and flat bodies. This position will perform semi-skilled tasks and will additionally be responsible for; washing, cleaning, servicing and making minor running repairs to vehicles as required and assists in or independently loads trucks. Some main duties as required include tree watering; delivers parts, materials, and supplies to various crews; assists with stump and invasive species removal including the loading and hauling of materials and equipment; works with a loader for the transport of various materials.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:

Completion of the eighth grade and some experience in the operation of light or medium sized trucks, preferably in general construction and maintenance work.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
-
Thorough knowledge of the rules of safe operation and the precautions to be taken to avoid accidents in driving light or medium weight trucks.

Good knowledge of one ton dump truck driving techniques as applied to general maintenance and construction work including trailer towing.

Thorough knowledge of the rules of safe operation and of the precaution to be taken to avoid accidents in driving a one ton dump truck, including training in pre- and post-trip inspections and load securement.

Ability to communicate respectfully and clearly with the public.

Ability to work as part of a larger team engaged in similar work.

Ability to understand and effectively carry out written and oral instruction and to supervise one or more subordinates engaged in semi-skilled maintenance or construction tasks.

Ability to operate light or medium sized trucks safely and efficiently and to perform servicing tasks on same as required.

Ability to receive and transmit radio messages clearly.
Driver’s License and Record Checks:

A current and valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License is a requirement of this position and you must be able to confidently read maps and travel safely and efficiently throughout the City to specific locations.

The license must not include any restrictions that would affect the ability to legally and safely carry out job responsibilities.

Your driving record will be reviewed as part of the application process. Candidates must demonstrate a safe driving history, as assessed by the City of Vancouver.
