positions during the school year may be considered in accordance with Article
E.11.3d
1.0 CONT Take a Hike Coordinator (See Position Description attached)
Position Description
Take a Hike is based at Westshore Secondary, Colwood Campus and is a full
time, alternate, multidisciplinary program for Grade 10–12 students that uses
outdoor, environmental, and adventure based learning to engage at promise
youth in their school and community. This program also includes targeted
mental health support and the use of trauma-informed practices and social-
emotional learning strategies. The Teacher Coordinator serves as the lead
teacher and organizer for Take a Hike, working in partnership with the
program’s mental health clinician, the District Student Engagement
Facilitator, and other school staff, district staff, and Take a Hike
Foundation personnel. The Teacher Coordinator for the Take a Hike program
must be physically fit and possess the stamina required to participate in and
lead students through daily outdoor activities, as well as multi day trips on
land and water and be able to perform during an unexpected wilderness
emergency.
Position Responsibilities

Works collaboratively with support staff including Student Engagement
Facilitator, Education Assistant, and Take a Hike Clinician. -
Collaboratively designs and implements the program including referral
process and transitions. -
Assists the District Principal of Pathways & Choice in reporting program and
student success to the District, the Board of Education, and Take a Hike
Foundation. -
Works collaboratively with the rest of the Take a Hike team, students, and
parents to enhance the school as a learning community. -
Collaborates with SD62 Secondary Schools to support transitions to the
program through a referral process, liaise with other school outdoor ed
programs, and be a resource to the district in supporting all outdoor ed
programs. In consultation with the clinician, SBT, and team members, case-
manage or co-case manage, design and implement IEPs/SLPs as required. -
Completes file review and documentation required for behaviour designations.

Actively demonstrates understanding and awareness of district policy and
regulations for field trips and risk management protocols.
Qualifications

Diploma, Certification or equivalent training in Outdoor/Adventure Education
and/or a combination of logged experience which includes hiking, backpacking,
ocean kayaking, canoeing, rock climbing, cycle touring, essential outdoor
skills (minimum impact camping, outdoor cooking, first aid, map and compass
skills, weather interpretation, snow shelter construction, equipment
preparation, clothing selections, trip planning, etc.). -
Minimum three years of successful classroom experience at the Secondary
level -
Minimum of three university courses at the 300 level or higher in Math and
English or equivalent experience. -

**
The starting annual salary for this teaching position ranges from $60,394 to
$109,520, with placement on the range based on length of service and
qualifications in accordance with the collective agreement. We also offer a
competitive benefits package and pension.
