About this Opportunity

This is a temporary, full-time, Lead Hand position. A willingness and ability to work any recognized shift, including weekends, is expected. From time to time, hours of work may be adjusted to suit operational needs.

Job Summary
The Lead Hand, Refrigeration supports the Mechanical Supervisor by coordinating daily work assignments, supervising crew activities, and performing journeyperson-level services on systems that transfer heat energy, including coolers, freezers, chillers, heat pumps, and compressors, using various refrigerants and mechanical equipment. The role may also include gas fitting, control work, and low-voltage electrical tasks where properly qualified. This position ensures project quality, safety compliance, and effective crew performance, while supporting the repair, maintenance, and installation of building mechanical systems, equipment, and repair of refrigeration and air conditioning systems that support building operations, research, and safety across the university.
Job Requirements
Experience: This position requires a level of experience equivalent to minimum 4 years’ journeyperson-level experience in a refrigeration HVAC trade, plus at least 1 year in a lead hand or supervisory role within a commercial, industrial or institutional setting.
Experience managing or supporting halocarbon compliance programs, including:
- Refrigerant leak monitoring and documentation.
- Annual inventory updates and reconciliation.
- Familiarization with environmental reporting requirements to authorities.
- Supporting audits or inspections related to refrigeration and halocarbons.
Specialized Knowledge/Education:
- BC or Interprovincial Red Seal trades qualification in refrigeration/HVAC (4 years).
- Safety training and knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and WorkSafe BC regulations.
- Valid BC Class 5 driver’s license with abstract.
- Environmental Awareness Certificate or equivalent course an asset (1 day).
- Training or education in leadership, management, and supervision an asset.
- Gas B Ticket considered an asset.
Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to supervise, schedule, mentor crew members effectively and provide performance feedback to ensure work quality and safety standards are met.
- Demonstrated ability to motivate and coach others, with a customer service focus.
- Strong communication ,organization, and customer service skills.
- Commitment to safety, environmental responsibility, and high workmanship standards.
- Proficient in troubleshooting and maintaining mechanical systems and refrigeration equipment.
- Ability to diagnose, repair, and optimize refrigeration and HVAC equipment.
- Skilled in using refrigeration tools, gauges, and diagnostic instruments.
- Strong understanding of building automation systems (BAS) and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, wiring diagrams, and control schematics.
- Competent in MS Office and computerized maintenance systems.
Working Conditions: Work occurs in various campus environments including indoors, outdoors, plant and mechanical rooms, and at heights or in confined spaces. Involves lifting, use of tools, exposure to noise, vibration, and changing weather. PPE required. Shift work, including evenings and weekends, may be required.
