About the role
AI Engineer Intern
Job Description At Mely.ai, we are transforming the supply chain and logistics industry by building AI-powered software that helps businesses automate document processing, improve operational efficiency, and better serve their customers. We are looking for a Product Engineer Intern who is passionate about building useful software, understanding users, and turning real business problems into working product features. This role combines product development and full-stack software engineering. You will help understand customer workflows, identify missing product capabilities, translate user needs into clear requirements, and develop solutions across the frontend, backend, database, and AI components of our platform. You will use modern large language model tools and AI coding assistants to accelerate software development, investigate defects, prototype features, write tests, and improve documentation. However, this is not an AI research, machine learning research, or data science position. The focus is on using available technologies, including LLMs, to build reliable software products that solve customer problems. We are looking for a practical builder who is curious about users, product-market fit, and the complete process of taking an idea from discovery to production. Mely.ai has participated in several acceleration and entrepreneurship programs, including Centech, Next AI, and York University’s YSpace program. Objectives of the Role
Develop a strong understanding of customer needs, workflows, and operational challenges. Help identify missing product capabilities and opportunities to improve product-market fit. Collaborate with product, engineering, customer success, sales, and quality assurance teams. Translate customer and business needs into clear product requirements and technical tasks. Design, prototype, and develop product features that may use AI when appropriate. Contribute to both frontend and backend software development. Use LLM-based development tools to accelerate coding, testing, debugging, analysis, and documentation. Communicate progress, technical decisions, risks, and results to the broader team. Stay current with developments in software engineering, product development, artificial intelligence, and logistics technology.
Daily and Monthly Responsibilities
Review customer feedback, support issues, product usage, and internal requests to better understand user problems. Participate in discussions with internal stakeholders to clarify customer needs and business priorities. Help turn business problems into user stories, acceptance criteria, technical requirements, and implementation plans. Evaluate whether proposed features solve meaningful user problems and align with the product’s direction. Build client-facing features involving frontend interfaces, backend services, database changes, APIs, and AI integrations. Prototype new workflows and product ideas before full implementation. Use AI coding tools to explore solutions, generate initial code, investigate defects, write tests, and improve development productivity. Review and validate AI-generated code rather than accepting generated results without verification. Ensure that code meets standards for quality, security, reliability, maintainability, and performance. Work directly with the Product Owner and engineering team to clarify how features should be designed and implemented. Investigate and repair software defects across the application. Write and maintain automated unit, integration, and end-to-end tests. Participate in peer reviews and provide constructive feedback on code, architecture, and product decisions. Participate in Agile activities such as sprint planning, estimation, backlog refinement, demonstrations, and retrospectives. Collaborate with quality assurance specialists to define test scenarios and explain the scope and risks of changes. Document product requirements, technical decisions, experiments, and lessons learned. Review the results of released features and recommend improvements based on customer feedback and product usage. Communicate blockers, risks, and changes in scope early and clearly.
Skills and Qualifications
Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree or diploma in software engineering, computer science, information technology, or a related field. At least two years of programming experience through academic projects, internships, professional work, open-source contributions, or personal projects. Experience developing both frontend and backend applications. Experience with one or more modern programming languages or frameworks, such as JavaScript, TypeScript, C#, Python, Java, Go, Vue.js, React, Angular, Node.js, .NET, Django, or similar technologies. Understanding of APIs, databases, source control, application architecture, and software development fundamentals. Ability to build, debug, test, and maintain software across multiple parts of an application. Interest in using large language models and AI-assisted development tools to build software products. Ability to review, test, and validate code generated with AI tools. Passion for product development and understanding users, their workflows, their unmet needs, and how software can provide meaningful value. Ability to think beyond individual coding tasks and consider the broader user, product, and business objective. Strong willingness to learn about both technical and business domains. Comfort working in a dynamic startup environment with several concurrent priorities. Strong communication and collaboration skills. Ability to take ownership of assignments, ask thoughtful questions, and communicate blockers early. Practical problem-solving skills and a willingness to work through ambiguity.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience building a complete application or product involving both frontend and backend development. Experience with Vue.js, Nuxt, C#, .NET, PostgreSQL, Python, or Docker. Experience integrating APIs or third-party services into a software product. Experience using LLM APIs, AI agents, prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation, document processing, or similar applied AI technologies. Experience with AI coding assistants such as Claude Code, Codex, GitHub Copilot, or similar tools. Familiarity with cloud platforms such as Google Cloud, Azure, or AWS. Familiarity with Azure DevOps, Git, continuous integration, and automated deployment workflows. Familiarity with Agile development and Scrum. Experience gathering requirements, writing user stories, conducting user interviews, or participating in product discovery. Interest in startups, logistics, supply chain technology, and intelligent document processing.
