Communications and Engagement Division (CED) is the central government division dedicated to engaging Manitobans in the work of government, by delivering the message of government policy and programs to staff, the media and the public in dynamic, effective ways; advancing openness and transparency across government; and increasing engagement and participation in the decision-making process.
As a member of the Engagement Branch, the ASL-English Interpreter is responsible for making government communications more accessible and inclusive by providing online and in-person interpreting in a variety of settings. The primary focus of this role is to provide interpretation for government announcements, events, and press conferences while also supporting the Legislative Assembly during Oral Questions (Question Period) during House Sittings which are broadcasted live online.
Duties:
The ASL-English Interpreter is a specialized position which provides American Sign Language (ASL) and English interpretation to provide communication access for Deaf and hard-of-hearing Manitobans. The ASL-English Interpreter is fluent in both ASL and English and will provide online and in-person interpretation.
This position:

Ensures the Manitoba government improves accessibility for Manitobans who are deafened by interpreting at public announcements and public events highlighting major government programs, services and policies.

Provides interpreting services for political and civil servants when addressing matters that impact the health, safety and well-being of Manitobans.

Improves the inclusion of public servants by providing departmental and interdepartmental interpretation services to provide communication access between colleagues.

Supports departments assisting Manitobans who are Deaf, or hard of hearing by providing day-to-day interpretation services.

Qualifications:
Essential:
-
Post-Secondary Degree or Diploma in an ASL-English Interpreter Program
-
Advanced fluency in ASL and English or high-level bilingual competence in ASL and English
-
Significant experience in interpreting between ASL and English including proficiency in multiple interparty modes: simultaneous and consecutive in a fast-paced environment
-
Ability to interpret a wide range of topics and issues in emergency and scheduled settings; familiarity with health, legal and community services
-
Experience interpreting in both small and large group settings

Strong organizational and time management skills demonstrating adaptability to unforeseen changes in schedule, interruptions, and a high workload
-
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to develop, foster, and maintain respectful relationships with both internal and external parties and multi-disciplinary teams
-
Political acumen, with the ability to work with sensitive information in a confidential manner
-
Demonstrated commitment to anti-racism, equity, diversity and inclusion with a proven commitment to advancing truth and reconciliation
Desired:
- Membership in good standing with the Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters (CASLI)
- Membership in good standing with the Manitoba Association of Visual Language Interpreters (MAVLI)
- Familiarity with Legislative Assembly proceedings

Must be able to travel throughout Manitoba and some overnight stays may be required
