About the role
Under the general direction of the Foreman or Section Worker 2, the Section Worker 1 is responsible for the inspection and maintenance of railway and aqueduct infrastructure.
The Shoal Lake Aqueduct (SLA) is a single, 97 mile long, large diameter concrete pipe that transports water by gravity from Shoal Lake to the Winnipeg Drinking Water Treatment Plant (WTP). The Greater Winnipeg Water District (GWWD) Railway runs parallel to the SLA and is used for the maintenance of the SLA and to transport resources to the WTP and the Shoal Lake Intake. Both the GWWD Railway and the SLA are over 100 years old.
The Section Worker 1 reports to one of two shops located in either Ross, Manitoba (approximately 58 km, East of Winnipeg) or Hadashville, Manitoba (approximately 100 km, East of Winnipeg). From the shop, they are dispatched to a work location, typically along the SLA.
As the***Section Worker 1,***your duties will include:
- Performance of railway related construction, repairs, and maintenance under the direct supervision of the Foreman or Section Worker 2.
- Performance of SLA related maintenance under the direct supervision of the Foreman or Section Worker 2.
- Conduct railway inspections to ensure continued and safe operation.
- Conduct SLA inspections to ensure continued and safe operation.
- Attend Shoal Lake Intake when operationally required.
Your education and qualifications include:

Grade 8 or equivalent combination of training and experience.
-
Minimum 2 years of experience working in construction or railway maintenance including operation of power and hand tools and heavy equipment.

Experience using personal computers, computerized work management systems, and Microsoft applications (Outlook and Word).

Knowledge of railway operating and maintenance rules.

Knowledge and understanding of the occupational hazards, safety precautions, regulations, and procedures that are applicable to the area of work (i.e. Confined entry, hazardous conditions, working from heights, etc.).

Ability to work alone under minimal supervision.
-
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
-
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Ability to maintain equipment and material records.
-
Ability to operate track and heavy equipment.
-
Ability to operate a variety of power and hand tools and/or machinery to perform general maintenance/repair work.

Ability to operate a two-way radio and other communication devices.

Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, external contacts, the public, in accordance with the Respectful Workplace Standard.

- Must have and maintain a valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s License. The successful applicant will be required to provide a Notice of Driver’s Licence In Force document upon request.
- Must be physically capable of performing all of the duties and responsibilities of the position including, but not limited to, lifting up to 50 pounds, repetitive movement, crouching, kneeling, standing, climbing stairs, working at heights or in confined spaces, both indoors and outside in varying weather conditions.
