Research Assistant, On Nonsmooth and Nonconvex Optimization Problems
About the role
Research Assistants are normally students, in a University of Winnipeg undergraduate program, employed to assist with tasks related to research. Work is performed within defined guidelines and under supervision of a more senior researcher or faculty member.
Position Overview:
We are seeking a motivated research assistant to work on a project focused on nonsmooth and nonconvex optimization problems with applications in statistics. The successful applicant will contribute to developing and evaluating solution methods for a certain class of nonsmooth and nonconvex optimization problems. The work involves mathematical developments, simulation studies, data analysis, and literature review. While research assistants are typically from the University of Winnipeg, in this case, applicants from other Canadian universities are welcome to apply.
Duties:
- Conduct a thorough literature review on relevant methods.
- Contribute to the development of theoretical aspects of the methods.
- Implement methods using R and perform simulation studies to evaluate their performance.
- Analyze real-world datasets using the developed methods.
- Assist in preparing research findings for submission to peer-reviewed journals.
- Write and format reports and manuscripts using LaTeX.
- Participate in regular meetings to discuss progress and collaborate with the research team
Qualifications:
- Strong background in mathematics and in statistical theory and methods.
- Experience with R programming, data analysis, and simulation.
- Interest in optimization methods and high-dimensional data analysis.
- Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and attend regular in-person meetings at the University of Winnipeg.
- Strong communication skills and attention to detail.
- Familiarity with LaTeX or experience contributing to academic publications is an asset.
Condition(s) of Employment:
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
The period of work will be from June 22, 2026 - December 8, 2026 and the estimated total hours of work will be 0-400 hours.
