Join our team as an Animal Bylaw Educator and help shape the future of animal welfare and public safety in our city. As a member of the Animal Care and Control Bylaw Outreach Team, you will be the face of the new Animal Care and Control Bylaw, which becomes effective on May 19, 2026. This is a unique opportunity to engage directly with residents through door-to-door conversations and community events. You will play a vital role in helping the community understand new rules regarding animal welfare, vicious dogs, and mandatory reporting. Your work will ensure that our community remains informed, safe, and supportive of responsible pet ownership.

What will you do?

• Lead and deliver outreach activities and assist senior staff in administering programs on a continual basis
• Act as ambassador for Animal Care and Control and represents the City in a positive, diplomatic and professional way
• Engage residents in face-to-face conversations to provide educational support to help understand the new bylaw and how it impacts them
• Answer questions regarding services, pet licensing, and the animal-related complaint process
• Gather data and record conversation outcomes using digital reporting tools
• Canvas and survey the number and types of pets at various properties, recording data in a central repository
• Coordinate logistics for outreach events, including material preparation and the set-up and tear-down of pop-up displays and booths
• Identify leads for potential outreach locations to expand the reach and impact of the program
• Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

• Completion of Grade 12
• Direct experience in customer service working with the general public or bylaw enforcement

Assets:

• Experience with data collection applications
• Background in presenting information to large audiences or community groups
• Knowledge of local animal welfare standards and responsible pet ownership practices

• Exceptional verbal and writing skills with a passion for educating the public
• Ability to de-escalate difficult situations and handle interactions with a diplomatic, professional approach
• Strong organizational skills to manage daily priorities and driving routes independently
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain effective relationships that reflect a respectful and inclusive style
• Proficiency in Google Suite (Forms, Docs, Sheets, Gmail) and a willingness to adapt to new technology

Conditions of Employment:

• Compliance with the City of Edmonton’s safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
• Hire is dependent on Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
• Candidates are required to hold a valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence or higher. Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
• Possession of current Standard First Aid, CPR-C and AED certifications
• Applicants may be tested

Work Environment:

• Due to the nature of this work, this position is not eligible for a hybrid work arrangement
• The weekly hours of work are currently under review and may change in accordance with the CSU 52 collective agreement
• Shift work requirements: Evenings and weekends required
• This role works in both indoor and outdoor settings, primarily outdoors (shifts may be cancelled due to inclement weather)
• Exposure to environmental conditions, extreme temperatures, noise, and light variation may occur
• This role requires physical stamina for repetitive and strenuous tasks (standing, walking, kneeling, lifting)
• This is a public-facing role requiring interaction with diverse people in various emotional states
