The Opportunity
General Bank of Canada is looking for a permanent, fulltime Director, Financial Risk to join as a key contributor with the Bank’s Risk, Security & Compliance team. Consistent with the growth trajectory of the Bank, this is an excellent opportunity for the right individual to contribute to building the Bank of the future with considerable potential for learning, growth, and advancement.
The Director, Financial Risk is a critical leader in the dynamic second line of defense and a key partner to the leadership team. This position is responsible for ensuring prudent risk management and enabling informed risk-taking with credit risk, liquidity risk, and capital management. A critical outcome will be to advance the financial risk capabilities, modelling, policies and culture to enable sustainable strategic growth as well as create an adaptive credit risk management function, enhancing policies, models, and portfolio monitoring.
Position Responsibilities
Credit Risk
In partnership with Commercial and Retail Lending teams:

Develop credit risk policies, limits, and standards-aligned to the Bank’s business strategy and risk appetite.

Modernize and oversee credit underwriting, portfolio monitoring, stress testing, and credit risk modelling.

Provide independent review and challenge of credit proposals and lending decisions.
-
Monitor portfolio concentration risk across industries, sectors, and regions.
Liquidity Risk
-
Develop market and liquidity risk frameworks, limits, controls, and reporting.
-
Oversee interest rate risk, foreign exchange risk, liquidity risk, and investment risk.

Conduct stress testing, scenario analysis, and contingency funding planning.

Advise on financial risk implications of new products and activities.
Capital Management
-
Oversee capital planning, forecasting, stress testing, and capital allocation. Provide advice on optimizing capital utilization and returns.

Review and validate the risk components of the RAROC model, including probability of default, loss given default, volatility, and correlations.

Provide constructive second-line concurrence/challenge to capital models, risk-weighted asset calculations, and regulatory reporting.

Advise on capital impacts of strategic initiatives and business decisions.

Own and oversee the ICAAP process.
Risk Analytics and Modelling

Design, evolve and continuously improve financial Risk Models.

Promote and support the adoption of AI/ML techniques for financial risk management.

Design innovative visualizations and interactive financial risk reporting tools.
-
Perform financial modelling and valuations for risk management.
What You Bring to the Table
The Director, Financial Risk is an individual contributor position which requires the expertise of a senior professional who is required to individually own and execute the outlined responsibilities. The successful candidate is an individual who is willing to be hands-on and complete this work independently without a dedicated team or individuals to support the required outcomes.
Required Qualifications

Significant experience working in complex environments, with a proven track record of developing, enhancing, and successfully operating risk or related programs and capabilities.

Post-secondary education in a related discipline such as Finance or Economics.

Accomplished strategic leader, decisive who builds durable relationships to influence and drive change.

Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
-
Ability to distill complex issues into clear insights and recommendations.
Preferred Qualifications

Post-graduate education is an asset.
-
Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation or in progress.
-
Experience liaising with financial regulatory bodies and applying relevant compliance standards.

Compensation: The salary range for this position is $143,761 to $215,642. Compensation is commensurate with qualifications.
