Overview
The Ice Leader and Skate Shop Attendant work as part of team of arena staff responsible for the safety of patrons in the arena facilities and the successful delivery of daily programs and activities as well as completion of regular maintenance tasks.
Examples of key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Perform exceptional customer service, responding to inquiries and request for assistance or information;
- Interacting, supervising and providing guidance to the public during public skating sessions;
- Providing first aid and coordinating emergency response to urgent first aid incidents when necessary;
- Performs routine tasks associated with daily maintenance of the rink, change rooms, and first aid room;
- Respond to facility needs to ensure cleanliness and safety is maintained;
- Maintains skate shop equipment, including ability to operate skate sharpener, skill in sharpening skates to required standards, and helmet maintenance;
- Prepares and maintains work records.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Ability to skate forwards, backwards and stop quickly and safely;
- Knowledge of the regulations, policies, and procedures applicable to the work;
- Ability to skate competently for prolonged periods of time;
- Ability to demonstrate competence in established procedures and related training;
- Ability to respond to minor and major first aid and lifesaving situations in arena facilities;
- Effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to be courteous to others in situations of conflict or disagreement;
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions;
- Ability to prevent and address infractions of skating rules and regulations with professionalism;
- Ability to work both independently and interdependently while exercising sound judgement and initiative;
- Ability to prioritize competing demands;
- Ability to prepare and maintain a variety of charts, records and reports related to the work;
- Ability to perform set-up and take-down of tables, chairs, and program-related equipment;
Qualifications and Experience:
- Minimum age of 17 years old;
- Completion or near completion within the year, of Grade 12 or equivalent;
- Standard First Aid and CPR-C/AED current within three (3) years;
- Ability to skate with either hockey or figure skates;
- Ability to successfully pass a Police Information Check.
- Conversational ability in another language may be an asset.
Skill Screening:
- Skate test; basic forward, backward, turns and stops. Candidates who are unable to attend a skate test date may not be considered.
