Help keep Ontario's roads safe
Join our Traffic Operations Centre and play a key role in managing emergency situations and overseeing the safety and efficiency of the provincial highway network. If you're ready to be at the centre of road safety and emergency response, this is the role for you.
This posting includes the following positions:
- 5 permanent positions
- 3 temporary, up to 12 month positions
- 4 reoccurring seasonal positions, up to 42 weeks annually
About the job
As a member of the Central Region Traffic Operation team, you'll face new challenges daily and make a real difference. Your role will involve maintaining clear communication with Ontario Provincial Police, emergency responders, maintenance contractors and external agencies.
Working in a shift work environment with rotating shifts Monday through Sunday 24/7, 365 days, you will:
-
manage traffic on provincial highways to improve safety and efficiency of traffic flow
-
operate two-way radios and traffic management systems
-
prioritize the sharing of information in high pressure emergency situations while maintaining composure and professionalism
-
monitor and record incidents, and prepare and review logs and reports
-
contribute to the continuous improvement of traffic management strategies
Learn how Traffic Operations Centres help people plan their routes and travel safely across the province through the Ontario 511 traveller information service. Information included on the Ontario 511 map page is updated through incident reports created by the Traffic Management System Operator position.
What you bring to the team
Technical Knowledge and Experience
You have experience with:
-
incident and emergency response
-
using information tracking systems that monitor real-time data
-
using emergency radios, communications systems, or similar tools
You can learn and apply policies, procedures and protocols related to the provincial highway network and freeway and highway maintenance and construction.
Communication and Interpersonal Skills
You can:
- build and maintain relationships when collaborating with different offices, partners, agencies, and emergency services
- prioritize information sharing and exercise tact and judgment in stressful situations
- identify and communicate relevant facts clearly and concisely
Problem Solving and Organizational Skills
You can:
- evaluate and solve problems to anticipate issues and make quick judgements based on the nature of the incident
- monitor and report on traffic incidents to share real-time information that informs decision making
- multi-task in time-sensitive and high-pressure situations to assess and implement appropriate traffic management services
Computer Skills
- you are proficient with computers and with software such as word processing, spreadsheets, database applications and browser-based user interfaces
- you can use different types of technology and software to monitor, track and interpret multiple sources of information at the same time
- you can maintain accurate records and database entries related to traffic incidents and operations
Hours of Work
- This position requires rotating shift work in a 24/7 environment, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
