Overview
The Saskatchewan Research Council’s Health, Safety and Environment team is seeking a Construction Safety Advisor to oversee and support the safety management of SRC’s Rare Earth Processing Facility during construction.
Accountabilities
- Conduct regular safety assurance activities such as walkabouts, inspections and reviewing safety documentation
- Coach and guide staff on job safety analyses, hazard identification, risk assessments and field-level risk assessments to ensure thorough evaluations
- Assist in incident and non-conformity investigations and root cause analyses, with a focus on providing mentorship to the supervisory team
- Identify necessary training and certifications for specific hazards or activities, verifying that all employees and contractors meet the necessary requirements
- Provide site safety orientations for employees, contractors and visitors
- Demonstrate safety leadership and support a strong safety culture by effectively and proactively engaging with employees and contractors on site
- Offer expert guidance on best practices, especially for higher risk construction activities like working at heights, operating powered mobile equipment, lifts/rigging and lockout/tagout (LOTO)
- Maintain and continually improve site safety plans, procedures and processes, and support the ongoing enhancement of SRC’s safety management system
- Identify potential unsafe acts or hazardous conditions and intervene to ensure corrective measures are taken in a timely manner
- Provide expert guidance, advice and support in finding and implementing solutions to safety-related challenges, ensuring compliance with all appliable safety regulations
Qualifications
- 5-10 years experience working in a construction environment, with a minimum of 3 years in a construction safety role
- National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) designation is preferred
- Safety training and certifications such as First Aid, Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS), Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG), Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) and Fall Protection are assets
- Knowledge of current safety legislation, regulations and standards
Skills
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
- Highly organized and detail oriented
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Able to plan and complete projects with multiple demands and competing priorities
- Strong safety acumen, with the ability to consistently identify and address potential hazards
The chosen candidate will also be required to provide an original Criminal Record Check that is satisfactory to SRC prior to the commencement of any employment duties. The Criminal Record Check must have been executed within the preceding 30 days of receipt.
This position is located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
