How to Write a Job Posting People Can Trust
A practical guide to writing clear, credible Canadian job postings that help candidates make informed decisions.
A strong job posting answers the questions candidates need to decide whether an opportunity fits.
Start with the work
Use a specific title and describe the outcomes the person will own. Avoid inflated titles, vague promises, and long lists of unrelated duties.
Make the working arrangement clear
State whether the role is on-site, hybrid, or remote. If it is hybrid, explain how often the team works together in person and where.
Share compensation honestly
Provide a meaningful salary range whenever possible. Explain whether the range includes variable compensation and identify benefits that materially affect the offer.
Keep requirements realistic
Separate must-have qualifications from skills that can be learned on the job. Candidates should not have to guess which requirements are actually essential.
Explain what happens next
Describe the application steps, expected timeline, and who will contact the candidate. Never ask for payment, banking details, or sensitive identity documents during an initial application.
